Wild shadows circling, swaying,
closing in on the wondrous walkway,
toward the final altar
soon to behold
the gift that comes but once each year
the summer solstice
a festival of light
precise observation of the source,
the Sun.

Prehistory, hazy, intriguing,
connections made, lay lines,
early astronomy
the deliverer
of a power that focused from within
but was triggered
from a distant source
albeit an all encompassing force,
the Sun.

What manner of man labored to gather
stones from distant Wales,
across the land
to Salisbury’s plains,
a wondrous monument,
and to this day still stands
as a testament to their beliefs
and the source from which all bounties came,
the Sun.

All who followed, felt the power
emanating from the soil beneath,
taking refuge
in the stones ,
Druids, gypsies, travelers,
bound one and all to Mother Earth
through her bounty
as bestowed to her by a fiery, but constant lover
the Sun.

See the stone way - now in shadows,
mists swirl, shapes appear,
fleeting, imagined, ghostly, or real?
Long white robes fill the inner passage
as the procession begins
and the Druids start their long march
toward the crowning moment,
when light that has traveled thousands of years
delivers the land from the cold mask of winter...

and they bow to the source...the Sun.

You've captured the awesome mystery of Stonehenge! I was there a few years ago just as they opened. An eerie mist lay on the ground..it was spooky!!! I enjoyed your poem...
