Misty mornings with
lacy fog fingers crawling
up over the green
Shiny wet cobbled roads
lined with thatched houses
Birdsong, the nicker of horses
the distant sound of the train.

Glowing round faces
ruddy cheeked, twinkling eyes
old men sat in pubs, smoking,
as the wild Irish music
begins to play, carried
out from the town on sea breezes
haunting, beckoning, toe tapping.

What you once were, will
you someday be again?
I can see history rising up from
the countryside as it passes
the window of the train
and I can hear the keening
of those that died long ago.

Emerald green, emerald isle
a jewel indeed
grabbed up by a greedy passion
and sold to those loyal
to a distant king
the mists are the tears of those
that died at their beckoning.

The sea roils around you
slowly cleansing the blood stained land
but forgetting is not what you are about
it’s the music that tells the tale
and riles the blood of the young
sad, sorrowful, stirring...never forget...
them that came before you.

Thanks for all of your encouragement.  I just found this place, so this was my first posting.  I like it here...definitely has a pub atmosphere.  I can almost smell the meat pies and taste the ale.

Irish music is so huanting and wonderful and thier ballads so lamenting, you've captured the beauty here well. It's a land of many contradictions but the music is the soul of Ireland for sure.

Lovely Writing

Jana,
Wonderful first post! Welcome to the Pub, pull up a chair and tell us more of the Emerald Isle. Dennis :^)

having the word Irish in the title of a poem is always the best way to catch my attention,Us Irish love to hear other people talk about us lol.

I have to agree with the others it was a beautiful poem even if the tatched cottages and old men in the pub image made me cringe. Though I blame the Irish tourist board for that misinformation. I am just ranting now.

a wonderful poem...

Misty mornings with
lacy fog fingers crawling
up over the green

Emerald green, emerald isle
a jewel indeed
grabbed up by a greedy passion
and sold to those loyal
to a distant king
the mists are the tears of those

slowly cleansing the blood stained land
but forgetting is not what you are about
it’s the music that tells the tale
and riles the blood of the young
sad, sorrowful, stirring...never forget...
them that came before you.

now these images are fantastic. I love the subtle references to Ireland's troubled pasted contrasting it with the scenery. wonderful.
