Each year, I and some friends enjoy a retreat in Penn. We have dubbed ourselves "The Cabin Boys". That is the inspiration for this work.

The Cabin Boys

The cabin boys, a mighty breed,
As rare as speckled snipe,
Converge each year on Chuckies’s place,
Amid outrageous hype.

They come prepared to gorge and feast,
As everybody knows,
They’ll eat until their bellies burst,
From Spam and Oreos

They’ll sleep and snore most any place,
They lounge and burp and scratch,
But corner them and they’ll admit,
They fear a lighted match.

The air is filled with clouds of gas,
Obnoxious fumes are passed,
So open flames are kept away,
To save them from the blast.

Their weekend’s full of cultured gems,
They set their standards high,
Their library of films include
“The Brain That Wouldn’t Die”

Their gamesmenship is evident,
They’re really quite astute.
They hone their skills with rousing games,
Of Trivial Pursuit

They have their own mythology,
And really it’s no joke,
Of hitching rides, five dollar bills,
Black bears and diet coke.

They’re known for being very bright,
Their brains outweigh their brawn.
They exercise their intellect,
With euchre games till dawn.

Their exploits charm the hardest heart,
From tales of ricochets,
To splitting logs and beaver dams,
And matches of croquet.

One patriarch of theirs is Chuck,
He keeps them on the ball,
They all look up to him you see,
Because he’s very tall.

The other patriarch is Ron,
A different type of sort,
They don’t look up to him at all,
Because he’s kind of short.

They cook their meat on open fires,
Like mountain men of old,
But mountain men did not eat Spam,
At least that’s what I am told.

To truly be a cabin boy,
You have to eat some Spam,
And if you’ve never tasted it
Well, try some Sam- I – am.

Authentic cabin boys you see,
Are tougher than the rest,
With twenty guys and chili too,
They have to be the best.

They share deep felt philosophies,
Focused on most surely,
Men of strength, whom you’ll recall as,
Larry, Moe, and Curly.

So steel yourself for their return,
And keep a watchful eye,
Or follow the delicious scent ,
Of Twinkies, cakes and pies.

You’ll find them there amidst a pile
Of playing cards and food,
To see them so’s to have your faith ,
In heroes be renewed.

Now every tale you’ve heard me tell was,
Given to you gladly,
Showing fine examples of ,some
Men behaving badly.
