Ode to the Dandelion
(or Why I Shouldn't Cut the Grass)

The sun shines high: the rain's gone by.
It's Dandelion Day.
From fertile spawn my plush green lawn
Is mottled yellow spray.

The neighbors' round, all cutting down
Their blades and flowers gay ~
Now green they've got, a common lot,
While mine's in vast array.

Why should I mow these lovelies low,
Defying Sunshine's ray?
To bring them down the sun might frown,
And turn blue sky to gray.

I'll let their seeds fallow new weeds
And mow another day.
Resplay they should, the neighborhood.
The Dandelions stay.

Wonderful.. I tried to use the same excuse to my parents when I had to mow the lawn.     They never bought it, though...

hehe... I totally agree, PdV... If it weren't a flower, I'd have to say that Cassandra brings me weeds to tell me she loves me...

Yu Lan - Glad I helped you and your mom smile..

BWA - when you get to BE the parent - You also get to get to decide when NOT to mow.. hehe.. thanks for reading & enjoying..

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....have to say, I agree with Nan here, dandelions are nice lil flowers! Weeds? No!! Very enjoyable poem, Nan!

Love and hugs,

Nan, This is a lovely poem, I also have these in my front yard, but the flower is gone and it's just a shoot with seeds.

Lovely Nan. What right does anyone have to say a flower is a weed?

May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out.

Hehe... so now the dandelions are gone - I only have these very cool little wispy things blowing all over the place... and knee high grass.....

So now you are in love with those little whispy white things, those dying little dandelions that spread more seeds all over the grass, huh? Which, of course, will eventually lead to more dandelions, right? Ah, I see the method to this lawn cutting aversion now! hehehe.....why don't you do what I did? Get rid of all the grass and have stones and patio installed? Rock and sand gardens are also very lovely. I actually gave away my mower last year! Never again will I have to bother with it, the best thing I ever had done to my house. Of course, if you have acres of ground like Marge does, this won't be a cost effective measure......hehehe

Now your getting it Nan

Take the ancient Egypians, great Gardeners,

look at their gardens 1 mile wide 1 mile high

triangular and solid CONCRETE.

Need we say more

This brings back memories of picking hundreds of dandelions for my mom and putting them in a huge vase on the kitchen table.  Thanks for this poem, Nan.  Made me smile!

Nan~

I like your little dandelions.
I've an aversion to mowing.
If it sprouts and if it's green
then for me it must be growing !

Dandelions in bloom
are quite an awesome sight,
When the bloom turns to billowing ballerinas
dancing in the wind with delight.

So don't be tempted by Denise,
who gave her mower away ...
Step among the dandelions
and I'll come over and play !

*Denise
My mower has only 5 acres of dandelions
to it's name !   John Deere loves me !
