For eight long years behind the bars
I stilled my questing to be free
Although I prayed that one sweet day
I‘d win it back my….. liberty

But oh they thought my lilting song
Sprang from a bosom full of glee
All I ever wished to say
Was please dear lady set me free?

And then the door sprang open wide
Gaping to the noon day sun
A cheerful whistling song I cried
To happy freedom I did run

Flitting now from tree to tree
Again where beauty lines the land
No more the thought of freedom lost
Once more to live by Gods’ own hand

I’ll choose and cherish my gentle bride
We’ll have and tend our downy young
And when the days are dark and drear
We’ll serenade them with our song

Come now in this blissful state
Hear my song of harmony
And know this tuneful loping strain
Is only heard in……… liberty

Thanks C.R.

Jon,
Don't exactly know what to say to this one!  Not much poetry makes me speechless like that!  Wonderful portrayl of hope in a world of hate.

Wow, this is amazing, I am also speechless the words won't come to mind. It's like I'm in a trance, just amazing.

Nothing worse than the heart or mind being held captive, and only the spirit can set it free. This is a wonderful verse, open to interpretation, and I developed mine on the first read.
An amazing poem, indeed

Jon,

This is a wonderful poem!  At first I thought you were in prison, but like Liz said, it's open to interpretation.
