She was raised to be independent,
to be strong and know her way.
Three years ago she didn't know how
she'd need those things that day.

They had grown apart you see,
as mother and child sometimes do,
but on that day the tables turned
and the child became a mother too.

Her mother lay bloody and bruised,
to her loved ones a frightening sight.
It had all happened in an instant
because a young man ran a red light.

"I love you mom," she whispered,
words she hadn't said in years.
She gently squeezed mothers hand
as she wiped away the tears.

I was unable to care for myself;
to walk, to bathe, to eat.
But my twenty-one year old "baby"
fought to get me back on my feet.

I lost all that I was,
memory and ability to comprehend,
but my daughter stayed beside me
as my body struggled to mend.

For a year she took care of me,
put my needs before her own,
and somehow despite all of this
our love and friendship has grown.

My daughter's my child, that is true,
but something so much more is she.
I will never forget the role reversal
when she stepped forward to mother me.

Thank you sweetheart.

Kim....while I wouldn't wish an accident on anyone what a beautiful re-union it brought about, and what an equally beautiful tribute this is to you daughter...wonderful poem.

From day to day, nothing so surely defines the quality
of our lives as the unwavering affirmation in the eyes,
in the voices, in the presence of our friends. It is through
them that we truly begin to know ourselves; and it is
their affection that assures our dignity and worth.

Challenge well met, Kim! This is so touching. I think one of the greatest joys in my life is knowing that my girls would do anything for me. They are truly a blessing in my life as yours is to you! This is a very beautiful poem!

Powerful, moving, emotional. A lovely poem.

 Mystical being
which makes ink flow
Surround me in
your incandescent glow
Fill my brain with
thoughts and rhyme
As I try to capture
but a moment in time

Oh, how wonderful that you have become close. It seems you always were, but didn't recognize it until tragedy struck. What a wonderful daughter and mother.
I have the same situation. My daughter is here to help every day, holds 2 jobs and has two babies.
This was a lovely poem, one that she will always cherish.

This is absolutely beautiful.  Mel is a wonderful young woman, so filled with love.  I hope you showed her this poem.  I know she will cherish it her entire life.
