Mick the Dog.

A simple man with unkempt hair,
He always had a smile
for everyone who met him,
He'd stop and chat a while,
For those who didn't know him,
They never would have known
the talents which the man posessed,
They would love to call their own.
He could draw cartoons like no-one
I had ever seen before,
He could capture peoples image,
With a few lines that he'd draw.

One day the neighbourhood magazine,
Came delivered to the door,
Inside I read some poetry,
Like I'd never seen before.
Such humour and such freshness,
From poignant to surreal,
No matter what the subject
they always made me feel.

I never knew the author
of those rhymes and monologue,
for the signature was a pen name,
A simple Mick the Dog.

I got talking to the editor
of this special magazine,
And told her that the poetry
was the best I'd ever seen.
She said, 'You know who writes it?'
I said, 'I don't, please share.'
She told me, 'It's Mick,
the man with unkempt hair.

Then one day I overheard
a conversation so absurd,
I could really not believe the words.

'Mick is dead.' 'Not Mick the Dog?',
My mind went fuzzy, in a fog,
Surely not, he was so young?
But he was taken from among
the people that he knew so well,
I wondered what fate befell
the man with the unkempt hair,
They say he died asleep in his chair.

Then, when I caught the writing bug,
The need to write was like a drug,
I needed to think of a non-de-plume,
Thoughts of Mick the Dog did loom.

I thought, 'I need a name like that',
So there was the birth of John the Cat.
A tribute very small I know,
But when I'm asked I'll always show,
If not for Mick the Dog I fear
that John the Cat would not be here.

May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out.

What a great story John.
A superb poem...wonderful.

 Jack

From day to day, nothing so surely defines the quality
of our lives as the unwavering affirmation in the eyes,
in the voices, in the presence of our friends. It is through
them that we truly begin to know ourselves; and it is
their affection that assures our dignity and worth.

Cat this is wonderful.  You do Mick honor not only with your "name" but with the words you have written.  This is very, very good.

JTC--You've met the challenge wonderfully.  You honour your "namesake" with the words you have penned.

This is excellent John...to be so inspired by another is wonderful. As stated by the others, every word you write is a tribute to Mick.

This was great and to know it is based in reality makes it even more so great job!!

 Mystical being
which makes ink flow
Surround me in
your incandescent glow
Fill my brain with
thoughts and rhyme
As I try to capture
but a moment in time
