I wrote this for a friend's 5 year-old.

What’s It Like To Be A Fish?

Oh, little fish all alone in the sea,
What do you have to say to me?
Can you tell me what you think…
Do little fishes ever have to drink?
With all the water in the world,
Do you ever thirst for something more
— for some other kind of liquid?
Have you ever been frightened by a giant squid,
Or feared those monsters of the deep,
Who try to eat you while you sleep?

Oh, little fish,
Can you tell me what you feel?
Have you ever felt pain from a hook,
Or the rain or sun upon your face?
Is the ocean a bright and happy place,
Or is it dark and cold down there?
What is it like to have no hair
— and scales instead of nails?

Oh, little fish,
Can you tell me what you wish?
Have you ever wished you could walk on land,
Or fly in the sky,
Or hold someone’s hand?
Can you close your eyes,
Or play in the sand?

Oh, little fish,
Can you tell me what it’s like?
Do you ever get tired of swimming around
— and aren’t you afraid you might drown?
Do you like it that you’re a little Pike
Or is it a Great White, that you might rather to be?

Oh, little fish all alone in the sea,
Wouldn’t you rather be a little boy like me?

I love it Gene, so fresh and young

John, Munda,  Thanks.

twinsgd,
Sure you may read it to them, but if it's for a bedtime story, you better prepare them for line #10.

So lighthearted and delightful very good imagination you have there

 Mystical being
which makes ink flow
Surround me in
your incandescent glow
Fill my brain with
thoughts and rhyme
As I try to capture
but a moment in time

Thanks, all. I enjoyed writing this. I was inspired by Elizabeth Santos' poem to her sister's grandaughter.

Do you ever sleep in peace?
Why then,your wide eyes?

kaile, Wonderful haiku!

It's funny, cuz this poem came about form this haiku:

Hello little fish
all alone in the cold sea
what say you to me
---

Liz,
Thanks. I wrote this for my secretary's little girl, I put "boy" at the end here, because I was the one writing it, but when I gave it to my friend's daughter, I inserted "girl" instead.

Gene--What a delightful poem; I'm sure the young lady enjoyed it immensely.
