       REFLECTIONS ON A LIFE

The sun lay heavy on the low scrubby hills, the brush was thick, the grass short and brown,
He watched as the cattle grazed, not much here to eat, he said to himself, with a frown.
As he rode on he thought how times had changed, the grass that once was belly high, the creeks that ran clear and cool,
He knew it was no ones fault, times were good, then they changed. You took it as it came, nothing else to do.

The years were piled high on him it seemed, still what do you do, some things can't be changed.
He thought on that awhile, and decided he wouldn't change if he could, he was pretty content with the way his life had been arrainged.
He had all he needed, and some of what he wanted, so that wasn't a bad deal, things could be a hell of a lot worse, he knew that for a fact.
Some came from hard work, some from the labor of others, but he felt that mostly it came, because he and God had made a pact.

Some would scoff at that he knew, but he could care less, for he believed, and he tried his best not to stray.
But it was a long hard road, and he stumbled now and then, he always got up though, and went on his way.
The years passed by, and things were pretty good, he thought back and added up the cost, lots of joy but yes, there was some pain.
There are always those that leave, some never come back, some can't,Sometimes the sun gets hidden by the rain.

There were lots of rewards, like that wife of all these many years.
His pardner in life, the two children she bore, he remembered her tears.
They grew up good, decent and kind, how proud he was of them, no man could ask for a better pair.
So if you spread it all out, and look at the last 50 years,He couldn't complain, life he felt, was fair.

He rode off the mesa, down into the valley, he had made this ride so many times, The years were starting to show, and sometimes he felt some regret.
Life seems to rush on by he thought,I guess it's because I'm getting old, but mabe the Lord has n't finished with me yet.

As he unsaddled and fed his horse, he looked around the pen and thought, how he had built it, with the help of that old woman, who was now fixing him a meal.
Hell, I wouldn't trade this for anything, he was talking to himself nowdays, He look up and said out loud, Thanks Lord, I know I got a good deal.

You always know how to show us a slice of life from a first-hand view. Enjoyed it.

This has got to be good as it held my short attention span and it was  most enjoyable.

I was going to write that it reminded me about the poems about drovers that I have read (banjo patterson and the like...Oh I'm from Australia btw) then I read athat it was about a cowboy..so I guess that is similar...I liked the storytelling style..and description of the outback..(or whatever you call it!!)
thanks
