                 MIKE

He turned 18 at the Chosin, killed his first man 5 months before,
He was wounded 3 times, it's tough fighting a war.
He was a Marines Marine, a mans man, the real deal.
But the price he paid, was wounds that would never heal.

His nickname was sniper, and he was deadly with his tool,
He grew up in a hurry, this dirty war was his school.
No talk of heros from him, he'd rather talk Bama football,
He only lacked the Medal of Honor, if he'd had it, he would of had them all.

We talked of his demons, his fight with alcohol, a fight he never won,
My friend Lefty, tried to lead him to Christ, but he never got it done.
He asked if I was a believer, I told him I was, and he should be to,
Lefty and I have talked many times about why we never got through.

My friend died last year, I think of him often, say a prayer, and wonder why,
That such a man as he, who did so much for us all, had to wither and die.
I am sure there are many wonderful things, about him that could be said,
He was a real life hero, one like you write books about, but now my friend is dead.

Everyone deals with their own reality in their own way I suppose Bill.

Some people are forced to do things that in other situations they would not.
Perhaps Mike didn't like what he had become but couldn't admit it to you.

You may have gotten through after all.

Jon

Bill,

A hero is how he will be remembered by those who knew his story.  Your friend may be gone, but never forgotten by those whose lives he touched.  I'm sorry for your loss.

Bill I too am sorry for your loss.  Obviously Mike was very special to you and as Sheila said, he'll remain a hero to those who knew him and his story.  Take care friend.

I'm sorry for your loss too, Bill. We can't always be sure if we have gotten through or not to someone. I'm sure you gave him much to ponder and hopefully he made a decision in his heart, albeit a quiet one. We just never know. These things we just have to leave in the Lord's hands. This is a wonderful poem about your love for your friend.

Thank you all for your kind words, this was a difficult thing for me to write. I to have thought that I never knew what was in his heart. Bless you all.
