               MY HOME TOWN

I wonder what it is that keeps turning my mind to this little place?I haven't lived here in almost 50 years, still there is a tug, it tells me I should go.

And so I go, and as it comes into view, I get that old lump in my throat, as I recall some long ago event, or a face that is still young and fresh, a face if I met today, I might not know.

The street is still the same, the one that runs through town. I recall when it would be lined with cars on a friday night, the sidewalks full of people, getting things done and just having fun.

As I drive that street today, I see only a few cars, a scattering of oldfolks, visiting on those sidewalks, no bustle now, just the sound of time, as it continues it's relentless run.

I drive the side streets, trying to find some place that I might recall, some I find, others are gone.I feel a sadness coming over me, I can't believe it has been so many years.

I think of my childhood friends, the things we did, and shouldn't have. The faces come into focus so clear, some are gone, and it hurts all over again, but you know, memories are our real suvaneirs.

I park my car on the main street and walk, up one side and down the other, Iv'e walked this street many times before, but today was different, now I was seeing it in hindsight.

I stop at a corner, here I had one of my many fights, it was over a boy who just wasn't right, you don't pick on them. it was, I smiled as I remembered, a good fight.

The people I meet look at me, I know they wonder who is this stranger. I want to stop them and say, I'm from here, this is my home town, but I just smile and go on.

I enter a small cafe and see a face I should know, I don't but he does,we spend the next hour talking of people, places and times, those that are here, those that are gone.

After awhile I say I better be on my way, It's getting late, and I never did like driving at night.

As I leave that little place, I feel a sadness within, I try to understand it, I can't, mabe I just saw my lost youth, as I drive away, my eyes are wet, my throat seems tight.

Now someday, lord willing, I will return, and if I do, I know I will look at this dusty little main street the run down homes that so long ago seemed so nice, for in my minds eye, it will forever be as it was, for after all, this is my home town.

Wonderful imagery - as usual Bill.  When we go back things have always changed. The memories of before will remain frozen in time, although slightly faded with age.  That is the wonderful beauty of good memories.  I enjoyed this a lot.

I guess that's why the saying goes 'you can never go home again'.....I know what you mean.....it's never the same as it is in your mind's eye. Perhaps it is better to hold onto the memories and not subject yourself to the harsh realities of the present.....it's hard to stay away though.

This is a really wonderful poem. It describes pefectly the happiness of uncovering all the old memories and also the sadness realizing that those times are gone for good. something we come across way to often. Great Job!
