MEMORIES OF A SNOWY DAY 7 OTHER TIMES

I stare at the fuzzy photograph of 30 young men there in the snow,
They are so young, and yet how serious they look, but then they were doing serious things, forty years ago.
The faces bring back a memory of one thing or another,
When you share every thing, he is not just a buddy, he's a brother.

Not all faces have a name, it has just been to many years,
Others are clear, I recall Larry holding a dead friends hand, unashamed of his tears.
I see Fronfield there behind Vines, we carried his body off a hill, and led Vines, as he could not see,
There is White behind Davis, I last saw him on a stretcher, holes in both arms and one knee.

Next to Larry is Red, a 12 inch scar down his backside made him fair game,
Standing beside Fronfield is Warrin, I'll not forget his face or name.
The hole in his leg was small, but went all the way through, It was also broke and I strapped it up tight,
The hole in his chest worried me most,I knew he had fought his last fight.

I picked him up, and though he was small, it was a struggle all the way,
Though he was in great pain, and just a kid, he showed me lots of courage that day.
Behind White stands Pope, a good christian man, someone good to talk to when tough times were nye,
I heard years later he died of alcohol abuse, life isn't easy, no matter how we try.

Behind me is Frank, good friends there, back home those ties would sever.
There would be no danger and comaradre to hold us together.
To his right is Parsons, I gave him my B>A>R and took his rifle when he joined us, like me when he got it, he wanted one,
He put it to good use on a frozen snow covered hill, but paid a price, they shot off his thumb.

I see Clark Madden Madrid and Sheilds, there's Bobby who was going to get married when he got home,
But she dumped him when he got there, he found another, and when I last heard, he was still going to try marriage on.
To my left is Bob, he and I were going to Alaska, he married a rich Florida gal, I wonder if they made it last,
All of us who are left are in our late 60s, I can't believe how time has passed.

I would give a lot to be able to walk back into that snow filled day,
I can't of course, but it makes me sad to think of how time has slipped away.
But that is how life is, I know I can't go back to how it was then,
It's just that I wish so much, that I could sit and talk to all my old friends again.

Bill, this is incredible!  The tale you tell is so touching...and your descriptions are unbelievably vivid. I feel like I know these men. Thank you for posting this!

I had Uncles and Father in WW2, none of them would ever talk about their experiences. One day while listening to radio interviews with veterans on Remembrance Day, the realization came, they did not want to talk about lost friends and comrades.Thank you for sharing Bill

Bill, Thank you for sharing and posting this.
I have a friend who was in the War and every once in awhile, he weeps privately with me.

This was Incredibly vivid and shows how people lose touch as life goes on and the commonalities are lost.

I can relate to your writing and your descriptions, words and images are very clear.

Kim

My father was in France and Germany during the war. Unfortunately, he died before I was old enough to hear his stories...thank you for sharing yours with us.

See Bill? I could actually see the photograph that you are telling us about! That's great writing!! Time does fly by too quickly, doesn't it? One thing that helps me when I get down about it is to realize that new memories are constantly in the making! Different, for sure, but still memories!

Thanks folks, I wish I could have sent the photo along, it would help. I think we all tend to forget to much to often, I am a big believer in the past, I find it very gratifying. Thats what us old folks think anyway........bill

Bill you have succeeded in making me cry.  Thank you for letting me (and everyone else) meet your "brothers".  And, welcome back friend, I missed you dearly.
