This is a letter to six year old Jessica, my sister's granddaughter. I've been trying to get her to write a poem.

Dear Jessica,

Did you ever dream of things to come
Or wish upon a star
Did you ever wonder at the ways
Of those who live afar

Did you ever study well
The wondrous wing of butterfly
Or stare up at the summer sky
Just watching clouds go by

Whatever is present in your thoughts
Whatever you hear or see
Can be woven into silky threads
Of lovely poetry

For sometimes words enchant us all
When made into a song
And poetry is the music
To which your heart will dance along

We write of thoughts and feelings
From the very best to worst
But any thought is beautiful
When written in a verse

So write a poem, dear Jessica
And wonder at each word
It may well be the very sweetest
Song you've ever heard

Liz

I LOVED THIS! I have been trying to convince my little cousin to write poetry too..she's nine and wants to write, but said she's scared. I am wondering also...did this work? This was quite touching nonetheless!

Thank you girls, for you comments. I haven't sent this to Jessica yet, but I'll let you know if it works.

This is wonderful, Liz!  How could she not want to write after reading these words?  Good luck, and be sure to let us know how it goes.

Liz,

This is beautiful. It certainly works for me. I've been promising a friend that I would write a poem for her four year old daughter--now I'm inspired.

This is lovely!! I, too want to know if it works
I have two children who have both began to take the pen in hand and it is wonderful to see the words, stories and poetry that they are writing now!

Lizzie~
Lovely inspiration for a child.
Hope it works.

Elizabeth this is wonderful.  What imagination is better to tap into than that of a child???  They view everything with wonder and awe.  To pen that imagination would produce many delights I'm sure.  I hope this poem works in getting your niece to write.

As you've shared this with me before , you know it's one of my favorites ... I think this will give Jessica just the inspiration that she needs ....
When she does write, I hope you will share it with us  .... the responses she will get, will give her the incentive to keep writing ... (imho)
I just love reading the work of a  child ...

Elizabeth,

This is great.  What better way to spark a child's interest.  Hope it works and the words start flowing for her.
