I invite you all to come with me and take a little look,
and read the story written here inside this history book.

I was not yet born when these events transpired,
but to know how much they rocked the world, my presence was not required.

The tale tells of a bright young man, John Kennedy his name,
whose youthful rise to president won him much acclaim.

Young Kennedy had it all planned out--we would have Camelot;
there's no way he could have known of the plan for Oswald's shot.

There in that Texas motorcade, John was struck down in his prime;
with so much left undone, how could it have been his time?

Bystanders quickly prayed to God as on bended knee they knelt;
no one can imagine how Jackie Kennedy must have felt.

They rushed John to the hospital, but that was just a drill.
Meanwhile, police searched frantically upon that grassy hill.

It was with quite somber faces that the doctors came at last
to say, "There's nothing we can do; the President has passed.".

As the news spread quickly far and wide, the whole world drew a breath;
everyone knows just where they were when they learned of Kennedy's death.

Now John had been a family man, and that he never hid;
he left behind a lovely wife and two bright and beautiful kids.

The moment came for this great man to finally be laid to rest;
to keep the children from being scared, everybody did their best.

In the military salutes are made regularly;
a sign of respect you quite often will see.

You might be wondering where this fits in;
to tell you how do I even begin?

As his dad's funeral procession passed him by,
young John-John saluted to say good-bye.

Freckles,

This is wonderful.  Hard to believe that you didn't actually experience this when it occurred by the way you wrote this poem.  I do remember and will never forget the impact it had on me at the time, even as a young child then.

It is a day that none of us who lived through it will ever forget. Your poem captured it well, Freckles.

I really enjoyed this...i wasn't alive when Kennedy was shot, but its always fascinated me. I guess because my last name is Kennedy too, though I am of no relation. Thanks for posting this! Was a truly great poem.
