A wise man once told me of things that he saw;
of traits you might call, shall we say, character flaws.

"You trust too easily, you fall too fast;
you must take it slow if it's going to last."

He meant well with his words, he wasn't being unkind;
for happiness and love is what he hopes I will find.

"I get the message" is the word I must send,
so I walked away from my very best friend.

"But he's not a lover, just a friend" you say.
True, but I met him the very same way.

I trusted completely in the blink of an eye;
therefore, I felt that I must say goodbye.

The words spoken by him were not in vain,
but the lesson has caused me a great deal of pain.

The cost of admitting the truth that he told
has been the loss of a friendship that was made of gold.

You might now be wondering what my friend thinks of me,
but he and the wise man are one in the same you see.

Yes Freckles, another good poem.  The wisest people in our lives are true friends.  Beautifully written.

Wow!
I'm not really sure what to say about this...brings a lot of mixed emotions, that's for sure! But this is a great poem, all the same. Wonderful job, freckles!

Thank you all for taking the time to read and respond.

twinsgd---Your words are always spoken with kindness; therefore, they are always gentle.

childomine---Thank you.  It has been said that a "mere" friend will agree with you, but a "true" friend will dare to argue.

Gene---Thank you for the kind words; it's always nice to hear from you.  (Did you get that taller ladder yet?)

Spyro---Awww........shucks........thanks!!!  It's always nice to hear from you too, Spyro!

Denise---Thank you for the kind words.  The person I speak of in this poem truly is a wise man; I am lucky to have had the opportunity to call him my friend.
