Haiku The Four Seasons

Winter

Cold winds from the north
blow through leafless trees;
a rebirth awaits.

Spring

Tiny pink blossoms
falling from the cherry trees;
fragrant memories.

Summer

Twilight’s last gleaming;
the songs of the nightingale’s
midsummer night’s dream.

Fall

Harvest moon, so big;
brown fields lay bare of the earth,
then begins their sleep.

-----------

(All four seasons in one):

Feeling very cold;
covered in leaves, he keeps warm,
as he dreams of spring.

Excellent Gene.  I'm not too good at Haiku myself and I respect your ability to not only write it but write it well.

Wow!  This is beautifully and creatively written.  You have a talent for haikus and senryus.  Everyone must know that writing them and crafting them is not as easy as it looks.  But, you make it look easy.

Take care,

I'm not so good at form writing.  (Can you tell?)    But I loved your haikus, you can write them in a breeze.

Thanks Everyone, this is my first attempt at Haiku, so i really appreciate your nice comments.

child,  I bet you can do it. I didn't think I could either.

Melissa,  Thanks so much, and thanks for dropping in. When you get a chance, please share some of your haiku with us here in the Pub.

Joy,  Thanks, the whole idea is to try to write them in a flash of inspiration--a 'zen moment.'

Janet marie,  Thanks, Hakiu?  Ooo, that means something totally different.    *just kidding*

Gene, these are beautiful ! If you don't mind I will print these. They feel like little treasures, each and every one of them
I know how hard it is to write haiku. I did not participate in the workshop at the time, but tried some "short" senryu anyway. I'd like to share them with you, although the meter is off in the second one, but hey.....I never said I am perfect

Well, now, gene! I think you've mastered the art of the haiku...while I'm still trying to get my rhyming words to make sense!   Great job with all of these, I think I'll print them out too.

These are great u-gene! Haiku is something I have never been able to master and I admire anyone that has. Well done!

Thanks, again to all of you!!!

I'm so pleased that you find these haiku so interesting. I've got a lot more. But, I've been reluctant to post them because most people think it's childish to write what seems like short insignificant little nothings. Actually, in its simplicity, it's really quite complex and the child-like nature within it's complexity, is what makes such beautiful zen.

Writing haiku has really helped my poetry. When I get a thought, I jot it down in a little haiku (kinda like an artist's 'table cloth' sketch), then when it feels right, I might make a longer poem out of it. For example, my poem, "Leaf Searcher" came about as a result of 4 or 5 different haiku.

Haiku should be written at the moment of inspiration. For example, this morning, this is the first thing I noticed when I walked out my front door (something that made me stop and think for a moment)...

Mountains in the mist,
crow flies east to find the sun;
spring will soon be here.

----

Haiku is traditionally written in three lines of 5-7-5 syllables (sometimes 3-5-3) and makes reference to the season in which it is set.

Senryu is similar, except that it's more of a "life's lesson." For example,

There is a thin line
between our pain and pleasure;
find it and be found.

Tanka combines the rules of Haiku and Senryu, but is more imaginative with a lot of imagery and can be hundreds of lines long.

----

Those of you unfamiliar with Haiku, Senryu and Tanka, can find a great explanation at  http://poetry.about.com/arts/poetry/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.toyoma        su.com/haiku

Have fun with it.

~Gene

p.s.  Oh, one other quick point. You have to be careful though--or Senryu can sound like a fortune cookie.

Gene,

Your first attempt at Haiku makes it seem as if you've written it all your life.  This is GREAT!!  I haven't tried writing Haiku since I was in school many, many moons ago.  You have inspired me to give it a try, even if it doesn't turn out well enough to post.
