The Blues

The room is dark
and the stage is lit
Candles flicker
on scuffed table tops
as the old man appears
carrying his guitar
like a precious child
He takes his seat
on the wooden stool
in the center of the stage
smiling at the crowd
hidden by the darkness
His wrinkled hands
begin to pick soulful chords
from the old guitar
A deep, mournful sound
from the old man’s soul
His deep, gravely voice
belts out the blues
Singing of lost loves
and missed opportunities
The crowd sits quietly
in rapt attention
as he weaves his tales
of sorrow and strife
The old guitar comes to life
his fingers playing the strings
like a lover’s body
Every chord right
while the silent crowd
unknowingly
sway back and forth
in their cracked leather seats
The rhythms from the stage
touching something deep inside
and reaching their hearts
The old man on the stage
captures them
with the power of his songs
Simple words that ring true
to everyone there
Reminding them
of their own heartaches
and feeling at once
known and understood
Finally, with a deep sigh
the old man finishes
his last, melancholy song
And the crowd waits
as the last deep chord fades
in the smoke filled air
He smiles once again
and then lovingly clasps
his old guitar to this chest
and turns to leave the stage
The room lights come up
as the clock strikes 2:00am
and the crowd slowly rises
walking to the door
Each turns and stares
at the now empty stage
Wondering how one old man
with a beat up guitar
could touch them so deeply

Well, music always touches everyone in certain ways...you'd have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by some kind of music, and you'd have to have a head full of air not to appreciate this poem! Great work on this, Gary!

This is so good, I remember going to a cafe with blues playing once and I was also amazed how deeply the music touches. You captured it beautifully with this poem.

Gary,

You tie in your love for jazz and blues with poetry very well. Good poetry is music to me and this is music to my ears.

Thank you everyone! I do love music, and I love poetry. So sometimes, I try to put the two together. Glad you enjoyed!

this was a wonderful piece. music certainly does seem to have a certain magic to it. this one reminded of someone who is also a blues fan. he can also play some. anyway, nice work!

Being someone who enjoyes the blues, I can feel the emotion in this piece and relate to it.  Great work.

Felt almost like I was there in one of those torn leather seats!  Music surronding me and touching me, just like this poem.  Really good.
