                   RESPECT

The young man looked at the old cowboy there by the fire,
He thought to himself, is this how I'm going to end up?
Sitting in a cow camp, drinking boiled coffee from a tin cup,
Thin as a rope, with my hide scared by barbed wire.

He watched the old man, his eyes were half shut,
I'll bet that old boy has seen it all, some of it twice.
I have heard him described in a lot of ways, none of them nice,
They say when he was young, he was a wild crazy nut.

The old man watched the kid through half closed eyes,
He thinks he's a bad cowboy, but he will get woke up.
He sitting there thinking he is a big bad wolf, hell he's just a pup,
I'm going to further his education, trim his head to size.

On his best day I can out work that kid,he told him self,
The trouble with kids today, they have no respect.
I've done a lot of things wrong I expect,
Now I guess he figures to put me up on the shelf.

Now that man could teach me plenty, I'd probably learn alot,
But I hate to get pushy, he dont seem like the teaching sort.
Take yesterday, when I asked a question, he cut me awful short.
But, he did answer my question, so I guess that's one bean in my pot.

I wonder if I'm going about this wrong,I'll try agin tomorrow, mabe,
I do admire that old cuss, reminds me of my Dad some.
Now there was a man who could get the work done,
I some how think this old timer thinks I'm just a baby.

You know, that kid really aint half bad,he wants to learn I feel,
It is just that he is so young, and a little dumb.
I never seen a man with two hands and ten thumbs,
But if he wants to cowboy, I better give him a square deal.

Just look at him, sittin there half asleep,
I'll admit, he put in a grown mans day of work.
He's just like a horse that's half broke,
But with a little help from me, I think he will earn his keep.

Great poem, great imagery, great setting, Bill! Gives me a little respect for the old cowboy just reading this!   You project the image of the two men looking at each other, guessing at each others' strengths and weaknesses so well. Keep up the great work!

I really enjoyed this and the way that both characters were "sizing" up one another. Excellent!

Very entertaining, Bill. Respect has to go both ways, doesn't it?!
