The Time Machine

Please take me to a place where I have never been
Away from all this hurried, stressful, hasseled life we're in
A place where I can sit and dream the afternoons away
A quiet place where life is slow and simple every day

Somewhere where you know your neighbor like your very kin
Where families gather round when grandpa has a tale to spin
Where Christmas means a sleighride and fresh puddin' in the stove
Where summer means reading poetry aloud down in the grove

You'd have to take me back a hundred years or more
To find this peaceful, wonderful nostalgic place, for sure
But then I get to thinking, it might not be that great
What about my spray starch and my Lean Cuisine Entrees

I'd never get an e-mail or a box by UPS
I'd have to feather my Thanksgiving turkey
That would be a mess!
No diet cokes, no air conditioning, no long interstates
No CDs, VCRs, GPFs and no BIll Gates!

No TYlenol, no microwaves, just how would I survive?
No super malls, no credit cards to eat me up alive!
No Russel Stover, video cams and no "Cat in the Hat"
No Ricky Martin and I simply can't imagine that

In fact, some day this time machine will be a relic, too
But for now, just let me have my Tasty Cakes and Super Glue
I've completely changed my mind about going back to the past
I think I'll just enjoy these present moments while they last

You know, Liz, I saw some pretty primitive living conditions in Mexico and Honduras on my vacation.  Made me really appreciate all the luxuries I had to come home to.  There is much to appreciate about the day and age we live in but here is so much to stress over too.

All in all, I think the people I was feeling sorry for down there probably are much happier not knowing what I thought they were missing out on than I am, having all these things.

Your poem I found quite intriguing...  Really made me ponder these issues.

Good Work.

We'd have to give up quite a bit, wouldn't we?! Great poem, Elizabeth!

Liz,

I think you've found it...right here in the Pub.

Great Poem. I especially like the Tasty Cakes--having a hard time finding them where I live now.

Boy you said it well Liz, I agree with Michael, when we go other places and see what they have we really do appreciate what we can come home to.  Always wanted to travel back in time, but I think I like it better where I am at the present (well Im beginning to at least)  Wonderful poem!

Just be glad I'm not your child! *evil grin*

I really enjoyed this poem a lot Elizabeth. What would I do without Passions, or indoor plumbing, or....or...The Pub ! I want to stay, I want to stay !

Michael, you are right, when I returned home after living 2 years in a South American slum, I found that Americans complain about the most trival of things. But this poem was written tongue in cheek, of course. It shows you how trivial our thinking can get. Imagine, not being able to live without super glue! Although those Tasty Cakes... especially the butterscotch...and what about those peanut butter...

Thank you all for your comments to this poem

Lol....I admit I am guilty of complaining about trivial things...like when I can't get online to come to Passions. That never seemed very trivial to me!!! Seriously, this poem expresses how silly we can be sometimes very well. But hey, who could seriously survive without Passions?! I really enjoyed this poem...the thought of that picture you drew of summer being a time to read poetry aloud in a grove....I could get used to that!! Ok, lemme stop rambling now!!

Love and hugs,
Lizzie

I love it Liz. Full of meaning and so much humour. Real life in verse

Liz,

This is a retrospective masterpiece, too bad we couldn't just blend the best of both.
A well written and thoughtful piece!
