I saw a squirrel climb up a tree
And jump to another limb
Of another tree (the one by me)
And I smiled up at him.

He looked down at the dragon standing
Under his transient perch
He jumped from the tree and made a landing
On the grass and soft green earth.

Then he did something quite surprising--
He took out a paper and pen!
I was amazed, how fast he was writing
He finished his piece, and then
Handed the tiny sheet to me
And I began to read.
He jumped up and down and I could see
That a reader was what he did need.

Welcome to the Pub, Mike!
Hope you like it here--a friendly atmosphere, or that's what I think, anyway.

Enjoy your stay!

I had to come up with this in a flash (as I do all my welcome poems) because I hope to catch them while they're still on...Hope this gets to you, Mike!

This is delightful, Sam! You write extremely well on the spur of the moment!

-squirrel's response-
from branch to branch,
a squirrel jumped --
not even carefully. was
this squirrel mad?
clear of caution?
was he performing,
or imagining an audience
performing for him?

somehow, the branches
were like little wooden trampolines,
giving him enough space
to leap and land,
leap and land.
until, of course, one day broken,
he fell.

luckily landed brightly
in a patch of dewy flowers.
sticking petals like signs to his fur.
he shook off the caution, reminders,
being a squirrel, of course.

but, as he looked up at the tree,
in shadows, ready to climb again.
the sun cast light across the face
not of his tree, but a dragon.

he didn't understand this sign either,
being a squirrel, of course.
and climbed straight up the dragon's back
to be closer to the sun and warmth.

with dew drying out of his fur,
and the last bits of flower color gone,
the squirrel resumed his jumping again --
jumpjumpfall, jumpjumpjumpfall, jumpjumpjumpjumpjumpjumpjumpjumpfall,
on and on.

Little_Spyro, that was supposed to be a thank you, but then turned into something else entirely. My head is too full of ideas.   So let me just put it this way: THANK YOU!

Mike
