**This is actually supposed to be a 'shape-poem', but you know perfectly well that internet just isn't smart enough for that.  It's in the shape of a woman's torso in profile, if you can imagine and get some of the effect.** -wen
====================================================

He Thinks

"She's sitting at the same dressing table
that was her eighteenth birthday present, her
various bottles and boxes spread out before her
in a methodical fashion.  She leans forward,
scrutinizing herself in the mirror.  As she leans,
her slip draws tight to her body, hinting at her
still-youthful curve.  Her green eyes glance at
my mirror image in her background before she
takes the first liquid from a bottle and glides it
onto her cheek. . .  She has a long, sensual neck,
and her wet hair has made spots on her shoulders."
He looks down at his clasped hands, arms resting
on his knees.   "I've been married to her for seven years,
and I don't think I've ever watched her at her dressing table
as I'm watching her now.  I want to memorize every move
she makes.  I don't want to lose another second.  Last night,
as I told her of my first mistake in seven years,  I could see her
fall to pieces right before my eyes.  I said all the usual things,
'She meant nothing to me, you're the only one I want to be with,
I love you. . . '  And she didn't scream, she didn't cry, she didn't
say a word.  I wish she had.  I wish she had hit me, cried aloud
against the sin I'd committed against her, shown some type of
emotion so I would know what she felt.  But she didn't.  She
was so quiet, so still.  She reminded me of a deer that has
just recognized the scent of the hunter in her forest.
She slipped silently into the bedroom and closed the
door. I stayed up the rest of the night crouched at her
door, my ear to it, listening.  I heard no crying, no
anger.  I heard nothing.  And that hurt me most of
all. I wonder if she knows that was the worst thing she
could have done to me. . . shut me out like that.  She's
never shut me out before.  That's one of the reasons I
fell in love with her. . .  because she was always so
open with me, so inviting, so there. . .   I remember
having a conversation with someone once about
whether it was possible to have something and not
have it at the same time.  I remember having scoffed
at the impossibility. 'You can't have A and Not A at
the same time. . .'  You can.  I know this now.  Because
I have my wife, but at the same time she's not my wife
anymore.  And I don't know what I can do to bring her
back.  I can't erase the past, but I can't go on living in it.
The only thing I can think of is to love her.  If she decides
I've hurt her beyond bearing, if she runs. . .  God, I can't
even think about that.   I just wonder what's behind those
green eyes of hers.  I wonder what she's thinking.  I know I
don't deserve to know anymore, but at the same time, I want to
know, I need to know.  It's too hard being suspended in limbo
like this. . .  waiting for just a word from her. . . waiting.

Wendy, This is captivating. How about a novel? You and Denise both have the makings.

If I had the patience for novels, I'd sure try. ;-)  Most of my poems have a prose-type feel simply because I DON'T have the patience.   -wen

Captivating poem, Wendy. You certainly are very talented!

If it was your intent for the reader to feel sorry for bothe poeple....you achieved it...well done.

I wish you had the patience Wendy!
I'd love to read a novel that you wrote!  This poem was rather prose like but I definetly liked it!

The majority of the 'poetry' I write is like prose... a friend of mine calls them "prose-poems," and even cited some famous author that did them too, but I've noticed people have a hard time with them because they're not (sounding trumpets...) POETRY. Still, it's all I'm really good at.

Do I post in the prose forum?  Not yet. I do write prose, but I haven't actually gone to the prose forum yet. I may do that soon, just for you *wink*.   -wen

Fine, Maj, I will answer you - I don't know. This was all the vision showed to me. But, just for you all, I will post another one like this.  I may have posted it in another forum, but if I did it didn't generate enough response to count.  I'm glad to have found you guys... it makes me not feel so odd for my strange style.   -wen

I hope as I make my way through the written halls of this place, I find the ending to such a sad and terrible thing.  I know in life its hard to do, forgiving someone who you've gave your life to. Someone who took such a bite from your heart, when they made one mistake and tore your world apart..Beautifully written and I do hope to see your name more..

MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU,
MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK
MAY THE SUN SHINE UPON YOUR FACE
THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS
AND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN,
MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND

This is great, so how does it end?!? If you ever write a book, I'm sure it would be a best seller!

Love and hugs,
Lizzie
