Ol' Paddy

Ol' Paddy loves his frosty mugs-o-beer
And nothin' better with it than a shot
Of ginger flavored brandy like cashmere
It warms him up a bit inside somewhat.

Ol' Paddy is a pal to ev'ryone
With cheers to all he slaps his money down
"Another round, I say, join in the fun
Come on, me lads, there is no cause to frown."

Ol' Paddy's wife at home sits by the phone
His supper on the table now's grown cold
Long countless nights like this she's spent alone
Just wishin' that her man were there to hold.

Ol' Paddy stumbles home it's gettin' late
Her tear stained note said "I no more could wait."

...............................................

Claire (Ol' Paddy's Wife)

'Tis true the lass was quite naive
His ev'ry word she did believe
"I'm leavin' work, Claire, won't be late
I should be home, I'm sure, by eight."

But on the way from work to there
"I'll stop by quick, a drink to share"
He told himself so many days
But found himself lost in a haze.

"Ol' Paddy, boy, it's time to close"
The barkeep said, "right on the nose
It's two o'clock and you must go
Be careful, laddy, take it slow."

Another supper down the drain
Another night of lonely's pain
Another hope gone unfulfilled
'Cause Paddy once again's distilled.

Although she wasn't one to drink
He drove her close, right to the brink
She chose instead to take her leave
For now no longer's Claire naive.

And now it's Erin's turn to wait
Expectin' Paddy sharp at eight
And she's home cookin', cleanin', frettin'
When Paddy's playin', flirtin', drinkin'.

Thanks, Sharon! Glad you liked them! These were fun to write! The second, Clare, I wrote in response to some of the funny replies I got on the first, Ol' Paddy!

I liked " Ol' Paddy" first time around and like it this time too.....and "Clare" is a Great addition!

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

My, but you guys are cheerful about it. I found it sad that she was waiting at home for him and he never showed...but anyway, good job, Denise.

Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail-
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!

Thanks, Elizabeth! I meant it was fun to write them simply because I thought of something to write about! hehehehe  It is sad waiting for someone who always disappoints you, that it true! Thanks again!

Denise, This is fabulous writing, I love it. Even though the tale is sad, you captured it's essense grandly.

Lost Dreamer's digging up some real pieces of gold, Denise, and this is one of them!   I should look back in history to before I came here and see what other treasures are to be found!
