While I hate empty forums, I unfortunately have nothing new to post. Will you settle for an older poem? This was written nearly a year ago, in response to growing questions (at least in mind) about cyber-romance and that seemingly strange phenomenon of falling in love with someone you've yet to meet.

The wheel, it turns from year to year,
The seasons shift and disappear.
Suns rise and set like metronome,
And time constrains all things I've known.

It took ten billion years of time
For stars to form from cosmic grime.
Another billion years or more
For life to crawl from ocean's shore.

Just sixty thousand years have passed
Since on the earth mankind trespassed,
And only five of those have shown
Society as we have known.

Two score and nine I've sought my place
In time's enduring, sweet embrace,
With quiet queries still thought of -
How long's it take to fall in love?

Does love spring forth complete and whole?
Accomplishment, instead of goal?
The way Athena's birth is said,
As goddess leaped from father's head?

Is love an instant happenstance?
A quantum spark afire by chance?
A moment timed by shooting star?
One breath you're not, the next you are?

Or does it track predicted course,
All stemming from predicted source?
One step, then two, as placed in time,
A path we walk, a hill we climb?

Does love begin with newfound trust?
Or does it start as feral lust?
Should loved one first be just a friend?
And when do love's beginnings end?

If this were measured on a graph,
How could we do romantic math?
Plot time on X, and depth on Y?
What kind of curve would love inscribe?

And could we find a point in time
When trust and lust and hope combine?
When all beginnings must become
A greater whole than just their sum?

The eons thrash and ages writhe,
As Legends turn to obscure myth,
But epochs speak still nothing of
How long it takes to fall in love.

Wonderful. But you pose a question. If you posted this over a year ago, that now means your four score and ten?

[Couldn't help myself!]

This does make you wonder when lust turned to love, doesn't it?

Does the heart need
to hear a voice
to fall in love thus
Or should the heart
Feel unsaid words
Is this way for us

Can the soul
see a face
In the window of our eyes
Or does the soul
Know when
the written word lies

If you could but see
The me that hides
Here behind the screen
Would you then
Love me more
Than her that
You have seen

If love be found
In this worldly net
Would it be your seine
Or would you
Slip away to find
You’d loved her in vain

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. This is probably my second favorite structured piece among those I've written, and I'm glad others enjoyed it, too.

Sunshine: But you pose a question. If you posted this over a year ago, that now means your four score and ten? A question? I thought I posed a whole bunch of questions! Must be you mean there was only one you didn't know the answer to?

(I said "nearly" a year ago...)

[edit]I suddenly realized there was a serious typo in the poem - that should have been TWO score and nine! [/edit]

If you ever manage to define love... or why we fall in love or love the one we love... you can retire a very wealthy man... especially if you furnish an antidote along with your solution? *G* Beautiful, Ron!

Amazingly wonderful, beautiful, sound.

I do not attempt
To be right
But I did it
In just one night

Well, that's for all the romantics!  Good luck in finding an answer.  A truly beautiful expression, ron.  Off to send it to my love!

Eternal question! I haven't a clue, but ain't love grand? I just enjoy the beauty of your writing and the grandeur of this poem. Ellie

Hey loved this, its a question i've asked myself too. Nicely written

Life has got to chnage,
Nothing stays the same,
Soon it will be time,
For me to move on.

There's probably not anyone over 10 who hasn't asked some or all of these questions, but there aren't many who have asked so eloquently!  I'm delighted to see what a fine writer you are!

Perhaps a quantum spark of chance,
Or just a simple happenstance ~
Love's found behind a cryptic door,
Once opened thou shall quest no more.

Love does depend on mutual trust
Embodied by intrinsic lust.
The one we love must be a friend,
Or love's beginning's bound to end.

There is a time surpassed by none,
When trust and lust, as love, are one.
Clandestine dreams, entrust to each ~
The Sun shall rise within thy reach.

To fall in love does not take long.
Hearts know at once when they belong.
Seems whether near or from afar,
One beat they're not, the next they are.
