A Child Like Will

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
He looked in the attic above--
But all that was there was the winter's cold air
And a few feathers left from a dove.

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
He looked in the cellar below--
But all that he found when he looked on the ground
Was some lowly black pieces of coal.

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
He looked through the whole dog-gone house--
He scampered, and tampered, and trampled about
Like a scurvy little gray mouse.

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
He looked and he longed for it much--
A carrot too ripe, Grandpa's old corncob pipe,
...And all that he found was of such.

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
He looked in each nook and each cranny--
He found a red coat and a big bag to tote
Junk that he just got from Granny.

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
He looked far outside at the snow--
There before his blue eyes and to his surprise
The gears in his brain they did roll.

"A Snowman's what I want for Christmas...
A Snowman!!" He thought to himself--
"I'll make him so big that he eats like a pig,
And dress him all up like an elf!!

He'll  have eyes of coal!! An orange carrot nose!!
A pipe sticking out of his mouth--
A coat of bright red!! A dove bearded head!!
And a scarf round his neck blowing south!!"

"Oh!!" Thought Bill, "What a perfect ordeal...
He'll dress up and look just like Santa!!
I'll use Grandma's sack with her junk that I've packed,
--He'll turn them all toys from my Nanna!!"

I searched for the best gift for Christmas;
And I guess I'll remain searching still,
But the least gifts I've found can greatly abound
In the mind with a child like will.
