The bells are jingling,
accompanying the carols
continuously playing
Santa bellows his ho ho ho's
from deep within his magic castle,
trimmed with lights and snow
Bright coloured packages
are displayed
everywhere
Ribbons and bows,
ornaments of all kinds
are strewn from the ceiling
and strung on a line
People are smiling
and laughing
and singing
I force a smile
to match the ones I see
on the others
Those who look so happy,
supposedly filled with
"Christmas Spirit"
I wonder what dark spots
they may have
stained
on their hearts
I sing out "Merry Christmas!"
through a fake grin
to a worn-out woman
with a child,
screaming in her arms
She beams at me and,
"in the spirit,"
chirps a greeting
But her eye, it lacks
a certain twinkle
What is this thing called
"Christmas Spirit"?
It is nothing more than
a novel idea, sold in the form of
jingle bells and Christmas carols,
magic castles and sparkling lights,
bows and ribbons, ornaments,
and most of all, that
fat old man who
guffaws at our
stupidity
for buying into the hoax
and spending our money
on gifts for
people we don't even like,
purchasing cards for
those we never talk to,
and grinning like idiots at
perfect strangers we'd normally avoid
"Christmas Spirit?!"
To Hell with it!
That damn marketing ploy
An old bearded fool and
tiny men with pointed ears!?
This isn't Christmas,
weare the fools
But who can expect a story to last
two thousand years?
Now Christmas is
but a legend
And the "spirit"?
A business venture
And what can I do?
I'm but a sheep
in the flock
I'll paste on my smile,
I'll pay my dues,
Until the torn bits of paper
are tossed away and forgotten
And the "Christmas Spirit"
is packed up in boxes
and stored away
for yet another year
before once again,
the fraud is reborn

This is interesting..I think you need to go see the movie 'The Grinch'..the meaning and spirit of Christmas is not this way for a lot of us..not for me...I believe in the spirit of the season. It's one time in the year, that I know people are really making an effort to be kind to each other.

I know, Christmas spirit should be full time, not just in December. True words, Angela.

I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust.

I hate your socks. I'd like to burn them!
