Emerald and Crimson
Virginia Salter

emerald and crimson laced with white
snowflakes and icicles flickering the night
sleigh bells in the distance
over carolers at play
mark a wonderful ending to a blessed day.

friendships on my heart thoughts on my mind
wrapping paper, ribbons, love’s blessings unwind
echoes in my memory of promises heard
linger on the breeze as the wings of a bird.

night’s darkness, sprinkled with lights
ricocheting, with the rhythm of the wind
flowing out of the north, bringing winter ever near,
magnifying how wondrous the hearth and having you here.

as grandma’s lap brought love and security
and grandpa’s pipe an eternal memory
the scent of your presence, the sense of your arms
enfold me, encircle me, promise me no harm.

the harshness, of a sometime world, is held well at bay
in the touch of your hands and the things that you say
you are not omnipotent, you are not invincible
yet when I am with you, I become as a child,
fully safe in your care.

I'll give an Amen to that Elizabeth!

I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust.

I hate your socks. I'd like to burn them!

What is that you express in your eyes? It seems to me more than all the words I have read in my life.
