Today was Boxing Day for our English Poets.... maybe someone would explain that tradition?

I am a member of the gentry of the commonwealth,
To show my gratitude, to tradesmen and their kin,
After day of birth of Christ, I kindly share my wealth,
A present fine to those who toil, a box with goods therein.

I am not English (I'm a Minnesotan!) but the boxing day tradition comes from when, in days gone by, the rich would fill boxes with items for the needy-food, and I don't know exactly what else.

Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail-
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!
-Oliver Wendell Holmes
