Young David

A shepherd boy named David went
To take some food his father sent
To brothers who were waging war
With Philistines, who daily swore
That they would vanquish every man.
They had a very frightening plan.
A giant was among their throng,
Called Goliath and he was strong!
Clad in a cap made out of brass,
The ground shook when he made a pass.
His armour weighed more than some men.
We will not see his like again!

David watched him boast and shout.
Within his mind there was no doubt
That he could cause the giant's fall
And so he went to see King Saul.
For David bore king's armour well
And soothed him from the evil spell
That sometimes came upon the king.
Then he would ask that David sing.
So knowing Saul with favor viewed
His servant and in a pleasant mood,
Young David asked if he might go
And rid Saul of this monstrous foe.

He told of tending flocks of sheep
That he must always strive to keep
In safety from the ones who prey.
Bear and lion he kept away.
So Saul approved and David came
And called upon the Lord's great name
To help him in this fateful fight,
To overcome Goliath's might.
A sling he carried and he threw
A river stone that traveled true
And lodged deep in the man's forehead.
Goliath crashed to earth, quite dead!

King Saul rewarded David then
And he did not go home again,
But dwelt with Saul, a hero's due
And all the people loved him too!

Noah:  I always enjoy your comments so much and appreciate them. I have always loved the story of David and Goliath and I finally got around to writing about it. Of course there is so much more to David's life and I will probably write more about him. Thanks Noah.

You have penned one of the most loved classic stories ever told. The rhythm holds the interest well. Anyone, especially children, would pay attention while it is being recited.

Thank you very much.

Melton:  Thank you for your kind remarks. I had been explaining this story to my youngest son and the poem started coming to me, so, as you say, children would understand it.
