Watching You

I watch you in your bed sound asleep
A smile on your lips, your dreams are deep
I lay my hand across your sweet baby head
Pray God will protect you in the days ahead

Years go by and it is your first day of school
You walk in the door alone, that’s the rule
A lunch and pencils are tucked in a bag
My heart flip-flops as I see your feet drag

I see the first whiskers sprout on your chin
A girl becomes more important as a friend
You ask for the car keys on Friday night
I smile bravely; inside I’m filled with fright

Today your college classes will start
It’s difficult to realize we will be apart
You give me a hug, kiss me good-bye
I bite my lip, so you won’t see me cry

Your graduation day is finally here
Even I stand and give a loud cheer
You are so happy, handsome, and tall
I reflect and know it was worth it all

This is the day wedding bells will ring
The joy of today makes my heart sing
I see so much happiness on your face
As your bride appears in satin and lace

The phone rings, I hear your glad voice
“Mom, we have a son; time to rejoice”
I am as proud as any Gramma can be
Carrying sweet baby pictures for all to see

I sit here and reflect over the years gone by
I feel a tear well up and fall from my eye
The years come, they’re here, and then they go
Life in all its’ beauty is for each of us to know

This is a wonderful method for marking time... the special events in the lives of those that we love.  God bless.  -Bob

Bob; Thank you for your comments.  I am going to frame this and give it to our son for a Christmas present.  Wanda

Betty; Yes, they are wonderful memories.  Now that son has four children which happen to be the apple of Gramma's eye.  We're very blessed.  Thank you for reading the poem and commenting. Wanda

Your poem struck right to my heart.  I am so glad I got to see my son in all of these stages, before God took him home.  His own sons are trying to take his place but they don't understand that no one can quite fill that spot in my heart.  Love, Joyce

Joyce; Your response really touched my heart. It has to be so difficult to lose a child.  I know you must be incredibly happy you do have the grandsons though.  Each child is special in his or her own way.  I see so much of our son in his children.  Thank you for reading the poem and commenting Joyce.  May God uplift your spirit today.  Wanda
