I came to the board tonight
With a tear in my eye,
For a brave dog named Kim,
Who did recently die
On the job to protect
And uncover illegal drugs,
On the job to help protect
Good people from thugs.
He slipped on the staircase
And fell to his death,
Serving us faithfully
He gave his last breath.
For Kim was loyal,
Man's best friend,
Who gave his love,
Right to the end.

Thank you Kim

I often think my four-legged friends know more of compassion and loyalty than most people. I wouldn't think of denying you your grief - but I will share it with you and send my sympathy for your loss. Your tribute to Kim is beautifully written.

MidniteSun~
What a tenderly touching piece you've written in honor of remembering such a loyal friend.
Bless you for taking the time to recall the love and loyalty
of one of God's wonderful creatures.
*Hugs*

I'm sure it is very, very hard to lose an animal that is special to more than its master.  3 or 4 canine police dogs in a city to the north of here have been lost to cancer.  This when 'they' defend that there are no more incidences of cancer in this area than in others. Heart felt poem, Midnitesun.

Thanks to all of you for your caring words.
To VAS: what city in Oregon has such a high cancer mortality rate in its canine population? I homeschool my teenager, and she is studying Animal Husbandry, specifically canines and equines this year. She regularly goes to the Baden K9 training web site, where they train (NY) working service dogs. Sara is working currently to train our 3yr old Jack Russell Terrier, and is hoping to get a Shepherd or Doberman to train soon. We are curious about this high incidence of cancer you mentioned. Please email us with further info. Thanks, Kacy

This is such a moving poem.  I love animals of all kinds and dogs are so special. I'm sure you are glad for the memories you have of Kim.

Thanks for sharing this story. We should remember the devotion these dogs give right up to the end.

Thank you my dear animal lovin' friends. Songbird, I knew somehow you had doggies.
2dalimit, thank you for your kindness.
Nathan, yes, they all go to doggie heaven, even the ankle biters.

And now, to explain the circumstances a bit further: I wrote this after a news broadcast about a dog "stationed" at Ft. Wainwright. He tragically missed the top step and fell. I only knew him from the news, but love all  animals, and was very sad that he died like that. So, even tho I didn't own or train him, in a sense, he was my daughter's guardian and protector too. He served his family well.
