As I pulled some weeds today, Lord,
The wind was strong and cool.
Is the summer nearly over?
Is it almost time for school?

The parents and the school board
Trust me with this precious load.
May I never lose attention
As I drive a street or road.

Some will be new students, Lord.
Might I help to calm their fears?
Please fill my heart with love for them
As I wipe away their tears.

I see the stress of mothers
As they kiss a child goodby.
Let me bring each one home safely, Lord.
The boisterous and the shy.

With my foot on the gas pedal
And Yours upon the brake;
We will do the job together,
Never making a mistake.

Another schoolbus driver
Transports one I call my own.
May she turn to You each day, Lord;
Knowing she is not alone.

They're the future of our nation
And their parent's pride and joy.
I remember this each morning
As I load a girl or boy.

A youngster may be unruly,
Disrespectful, even wild.
Help me to keep my patience, Lord.
He is someone's well loved child.

Amen.

For Avis as she starts another year of driving.
From Mom 8/16/01

Joyce:  Your daughter will love and appreciate this poem I'm sure.  Being a school bus driver is a difficult job at the best of times.

Joyce,
This is a lovely!  I have never seen another like it on this particular them--But you did a wonderful job. It is filled with gracious and thoughtful considerations we the general public, ever give much thought to.
Thanks for reminding us of the Precious cargo soon to be on the road again, and the wonderful service the bus drivers provide, with the help of the Lord.

What a timely poem. I begin working part-time next week as a school bus monitor, riding along to help manage the students so that everyone gets to and from safely...not always an easy task, especially on icy snowy roads with potholes the size of meteor craters in Alaska. Thanks for reminding me why I applied for this position.

Thanks Deleeme and Trillium for your nice comments.

Midnight Sun it was nice to hear from you.  I am glad they have monitors on the busses in Alaska.  Here in Washington, the busdriver must drive and keep order at the same time.  I have always thought they should have a helper.  Good luck on your new job.  Joyce

Joyce~
How wonderful this message.
As the mother of four who rode many a school bus ...
I have great love and appreciation for the kindness
shown by drivers through the years.
They carried my most precious cargo ...
and I always offered up a special prayer for them.
Thank you for reminding me.

School bus drivers have to be special people..in order to be good ones. I certainly would not want the job, it isn't my calling that is for sure.  Good poem.
