Keeper of the Light

Out upon a point of land,
Where breakers crash all day,
A lighthouse takes a stalwart stand.
It's seen from miles away.
Tall and white against the sky.
Gorse growing at it's base.
Around it's top the sea birds fly.
It is a lonely place.
At dark, the beam flares brightly
And flashes yellow light,
So any ships along the shore
Are guided through the night.
The man who keeps it glowing
Must feel a sense of pride
And great satsifaction knowing
Each turning of the tide,
The brilliant rays are showing,
Where jagged rocks abide.
He gives thanks every morning
to the Keeper Of The Light,
For helping men determine,
Which way is wrong or right.

BettyLou~
Such a lovely picture you've painted in your verse~
Lighthouses are such inspiration for poetic thoughts.

Thank you for interesting me into taking a peek at 'Gorse' ..

Something that looks so lovely ...
and yet is so destructively dangerous~

I love to learn ... thank you~

A wonderful description of lighthouses and the keepers,
...So any ships along the shore
Are guided through the night...

and a reminder we also are lighthouses for any passing ships that need guidance.

Thanks,
Melton

Marge: Thanks for your comments and I enjoyed the picture of gorse.  It was in full bloom when we were at the Oregon Coast in June and is a gorgeous sight!

Betty,
You have masterfully penned this lighthouse themed poem, one that has been used many times--yet your submission here is a welcome addition. The great spiritual overtones, of Christ the True Light of the World, and His followers as the light house keepers, giving men guidance and warnings from Christ-make the lighthouse theme a most beautiful illustration of the Truth.

Betty Lou,
I love lighthouses...every time I see one (which isn't very often) I always think of how God is the keeper of our lights and showing us what is wrong and right...I love the way your portrayed this! Beautiful write!

my daughter and I have gone to almost every Washington State and Oregon lighthouse, we love them so, I because they are truly a metaphor for how He guides us when we open our eyes

the pic Marge put up of gorse looks like my late grandpa's favorite flower, Scotch Broom, or Scott's Bloom...I was never certain what he was saying when he named it, he died when I was 6

lovely poem, Betty, vivid and precious

cpalmer:  Thanks for your nice comments. I always feel the same way about lighthouses. Like they are God's beacons.

VAS:  Thanks for all your comments.  I lived in Oregon for many years and knew several people who called gorse, Scotch Broom.  I always thought it was a beautiful plant in the spring. The leaves are poisonous to livestock, but some birds like the seeds, like quail and bobwhite. It certainly abounds on the coast.

I love lighthouses. They are a refuge, a comfort, a guiding light for lost ships and souls. Thanks for the beautiful poem, and for making me inquire about an unfamiliar plant name. It sounds like a Scott's Broom.

You've painted a beautiful picture with your pen - and shared your lighthouse so well that even the landlocked smell the salt.   I like this very much.

midnitesun:  Thanks!  The gorse is called Scotch Broom by many people. It's really beautiful in full flower, which is usually June.  I was on the Oregon Coast this year, at that time, and it was a wonderful sight.
