In this swell
of urbanites,
flexing their crushing chaos
and welding rush hour briefcases
I walk at a pleasurable pace,
not preciously guarding
an allotted pavement space.

I wander free
from these structures,
displaying adverts as art.
The dazed eyed drool
on consumer pockets
trading all identity
for logo conformity.
All follower accept
I see no use for
useless labels serving
only to judge and confuse.

All the world lost to adulthood,
Innocence is traded in
for better wealth up grades;
shiny objects that always fade.
I often return to memories
before my outright masculinity.
These fragments play in static
motion, little incidental
yet refining events.
Images of tangled undergrowth,
nestling in a summer's song,
once we knew the wisdom of nature
before our mass betrayal.
Once we were children.

Once we were babies?

"Build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life". Terry Pratchett

I enjoyed this, it is well written and it states very vividly how easy it is to get tangled in so many things that only serve to complicate our lives instead of better them. Baby and children have much simpler lives of course because that is all they could handle. It is a poem that makes you think, I enjoy those kind very much.

This is so true. We get tangled in the "things" of the world and forget the path we should follow. I really enjoyed this!

Great write, Brian.  All too often we get caught up in the material aspect of life and don't take the time to stop and take a look around us.  Many are ruled by material possessions that in the end carry no worth because you can't take it with you.  I love your perspective on this.  Excellent!

All writing comes
by the grace of God.

Sitting quietly, doing nothing
Spring comes
and the grass grows by itself.

Your poem is the bell
that rings
to bring
us back to where we always are,
here and now.

killed my Buddha, killed my Christ
Killed my karma, paid the price

For 27 years I've carried the welt
Wie klein ist Ihre Welt?

This poem paints well the insufficiency of a materialistic world view that has swallowed much of America today.

"Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire.  You have heaped up treasure in the last days."  James 5:3

I wish my mom would understand that.
