“I was the shadow of the waxwing slain
By the false azure in the windowpane
I was the smudge of ashen fluff—and I
Lived on, flew on, in the reflected sky...”
Nabokov, “Pale Fire”

Our ends but prove the endlessness beyond.
Just like reflections in the azure pond,
Reveal to us the enigmatic void,
So do our lives, and we should not avoid
The possibility of spirits, goblins, ghosts,
For even those whose arms embrace the cross
Live on to tell their stories in our speech
And from the seventh cloud voices reach
Our deafened ears to be consumed by time...
We barely hear the echoes of sublime,
And often, we neglect most vivid hints
And chase instead the most misprinted prints
While all around us, like butterflies aloft,
Gray phantoms hover in the undergrowth.

Wanted you to know I've read this a few times, and it's just not absorbing. By no fault of your own though,   , my brain is full of grey matter. LOL

I will stop back later, and read it again.

Master~
You sure picked a fascinating Russian poet to quote. (Tee-Hee, I know this one)

I've read Pale Fire and it's fascinating.
Nabkov was quite the talented writer, poet and personality.
His fascination with butterflies was evident in some of his work ...
much of it, in fact.

His 'claim-to-fame', Lolita ...
is still a much discussed piece.

'Our ends but prove the endlessness beyond.'
I enjoyed this very much.

Now I'm off to re-read 'Pale Fire' !

Master,

I really like the imagery you have chosen to express the afterlife in this poem and how you relate those not so haunting spectrums into our living today... I do belive those voices from the 7th cloud and those gray phantoms to be the voices and images of angels...  Great poem.  Oh, and I loved the deca-syllables.  Bob <><

A really fascinating poem.  I've read it several times and seem to discover new depths each time.
