You Don't Know Me

When our eyes meet
You know my name
We have been introduced
And I know yours

If I passed you on the street
We would stop and chat
About your current activities
Of the day and then go on our way

But you don't know me

You see me every Sunday
Sitting in a pew
Praising God and saying
I love Jesus too.

But you don't know me
And I don't think I really know
You like I want to

Sometimes I feel like a lonely little boat
Upon a great big sea
I keep drifting and a sailing
Out where the waters deep
Daylight comes and goes
The shoreline vanishes from sight
If it wasn't for my anchor
I would really be lost in the night

I wonder if you have the same feelings as I
Are you a little boat adrift?
Or are you a ship with ruters vast
Do you have a engine that roars
That swiftly takes you where you want to go
Are you a ship that makes waves so huge
That little boats are swallowed by their path

Is your ship a pleasure cruiser
It's destination Fun
Or is it a fishing troller
Meant to bring some food back home
To a hungry one
Or are you a Ocean liner
Your pace is fast and swift
Or do you travel incoherent
Beneath the water's deep

Or perhaps you are the faithful Coastguard
That patrols the sea swept shore
Looking for perilous situations
Offering help to those who are in distress

I promise
When our eyes meet again
To look beneath
The blue waters of your eyes
Perhaps we can both look below the surface
And hear each other's cries

It may take a little effort and time
On both our parts
But does it really matter if you are a ship
And I'm just a canoe
If we are alone upon the waters
Passing by like two ships in the night?

Septsong,

I love this!!  It is a great reminder that although we may see someone all the time and say hi to them, that we do not KNOW them.  Unless of course we take the time and put forth a little effort.  You never know, you may be missing out on someone who could come to be a dear friend rather than just an acquaintance that we see in church on Sundays.  Excellent point!!

This was fantastic! You should drift back and forth though,   but paddle along his boat.  Talk to him, get to know him.
Find common interests!

Do a project together or something, you know?

God will certainly help it along the way!

I really, really enjoyed this one!!

I recall a time when I was a small boat among great ocean liners. (so, I thought) It seemed that I was also going a much different pace than the world (ships) around me.  Those  great big ships (relationship opportunities)kept passing in the night.  But, with God's help this little boat found the courage to speak up and my wife and I have been sailing in the same waters ever since. I saw so many personality types in your analogy... and you are right, no one will know us until we untie from the dock and try.  God Bless You, Bob <><

This is such a true way of describing what we all see day by day. We really don't know what is behind a blank stare or a grinning face. We all have a way of masking what we fear others may see.
What I do know is that all respond to love. Even if in a silent way.

SeptSong~
It's so nice to see you !
Your poetry is lovely ...
what a thoughtful piece.

I was inspired by your poem -

I tried to sail
without a breeze
Sat dead-in-the-water
Pretty as you please

Until a boat
with electronic sail
passed by me
and shared a gale

My sails were billowed
I now could glide free
over the ocean
with friendship beside me

A life-line of friendship
was thrown to me
My boat is now anchored alongside
a friend who's willing
to take me for a ride

I can so relate to these heartfelt words, written so beautifully too. I always felt this way in church. The curch I used to go to, no one seemed to care, no matter how hard I tried to make friends. We don't go there any more. Now i trust that God will bring me the friends that are just right for me. love, ellie

Septsong, how could I miss the tune "Getting to Know You" coming through loud and clear...[at least in my head...]

it is SO important to take time out to get to know others...glad to hear that you know this  quite well.
