Taught to Forgive

A part of me becomes completely dead
when someone receives lethal injection,
is it our right to take another man's life,
can truth ever shine a brilliant reflection?

Is judge and jury always the correct deity,
how can legal murder justify in the end?
Am I so wayward that I've lost perspective
as deep in my soul my heart seeks to lend?

Innocent or guilty only God knows the truth,
through him we are judged for how we live.
What makes any man decide the fate of life
when through God we are taught to forgive?

This was in reflection of the man put to death in Texas last night for a murder he swore he did not commit.

I agree wholeheartedly, I am so opposed to the death penalty. If they are guilty, life imprisonment is a much  worse fate and also there is time to look further into the truth of guilty or not. Thanks for this insight.

Summers haunting melody
that awakens
the butterflies,
calling them to join
the dance
in their silent song
of praise to God.

LD,
I agree also, an imperfect judicial system can not guarantee perfect justice.
Yes , we must be ready to forgive, but in capital crimes, we dare not forget!(SCRAPE, SCRAPE, me puting my soapbox away). You ask some excellent questions here, thank you for this thoughtful piece. Dennis :^)

Gloria, I feel this one! It's very well expressed. Like I told you, I'm neither for it nor against it. I think it's because I felt so very much like you, that I just gave up thinking about it because it frustrated me so much.

In the O.T. forgive me right now I can't tell you which book...Lev. (yes)
It goes into all kinds of things, if we happened to kill someone accidentally...what should be done.
But kill and murder in the Bible are two different things. Murder is to lie in wait, premeditated. I shall look up those verses when I have more time.

You have a wonderful heart, very caring, very affectionate    Don't change it

These are issues that I have given much thought to through the years. Generally, I tend to be against the death penalty too. I also believe that there are far more innocent people doing time (and dying) than we could ever imagine. It is an understatement that the judicial system is not perfect. Great poem about an important subject, Gloria.
