Call Me Back From The Pain

From where does all the sorrow draw near?
We've tried to disguise the affliction of the pain
but truth be known, we've not dealt with it
and it's waiting out there to come again.

The losses of life, whether through surprise or comprised
of complications, medical or perhaps otherwise,
they never hurt as much as we would first suspect
as it will when we have even the briefest moment to reflect.

For life calls us back too quickly to take the time we need
to give acceptance to that excruciating spell called grief,
we allow ourselves to flounder along, hiding well indeed
when t'would be best to be weeping, that is my belief.

For hidden grief can take us by circumstantial surprise,
sudden depression frowns and reddens crying eyes.
The heaviness of the heart pulls all the muscles down,
darkness of the soul suffocates as if it's become hell-bound.

When is it that we should start to fight this terrible, sinking, feeling,
when to actually give in to it would leave our senses reeling?
How are we expected to ever smile at others faces
when our arms are empty of long-lost past loves' embraces?

You've been there, along with I, and others have walked before us
that desperation of loss, leaving one's skin feeling chalk-like porous,
where we attempt to touch, but cannot feel, laugh, but not be real,
work as if there is no tomorrow, all to hide this blackened sorrow.

And even, my friend, with God's light, sometimes it doesn't shine
when that love we've lost was sister, brother, parent, or lover mine,
or small babe, grown child, a stranger we've just met;
all of the words that are said in comfort, won't ever help us forget.

So to you, my friend, whether I've known you briefly
or for all time's eternity, we'll share our feelings,
and know rapport, in life's most certain extremity,
I will be there for you, as you will be there for me,
and if I have to pray to find you, I hope you'll pray for me.

Dearest Sunshine; This wonderful poem really touched me deeply. I've lost a child and you are right the pain never really goes away. We need each other always, for comfort and solace and prayers. I'll hold your words in my heart this night. God bless you sweet Sunshine. Love, Ellie

Sunshine, I agree with ellie. Life is hard. We are suppose to have certain feelings with certain events, it's only when we can't get past these emotions and we shut down. Happens to us all, that's what good or Christian friends are for, to pick us up and move on. We need our friends praying for us during these times we feel nothing but pain.
Very good message in your lovely poem. marcy

Sunshine - You certainly have captured so many of the feelings I have had too many times.  What a wonderful way to express them and to offer friendship in those troubled times.  Your words here are so true, life expects us back in 3 days.... and for the rest of our lives....we mourn.  This is truly beautiful, thanks so much for sharing it.  Bonnie

Yes, Bonnie, grief catches you at the oddest times...and in less than a moment's notice... so thank you for commenting...

Whtdove, if ever I can offer food for thought, I try to [usually when trying to figure out things for myself...] so thank you for letting me know how this affected you...

Thank you Sunshine for the encouraging words on a needed topic: Good Grief- and the need to let it run it's course-and to bless us by it's faithful resolution.
I think this is one we can all lay to heart.  David

I am deeply humbled by these responses. All I can say is, thank you. We all at one time or another go through undescribable sorrow. Those who are poets, or even would-be poets, such as I, find that writing out our sorrow in message, and in words, and thanks be to God, words as these, are some solace to our spirit. Wondrously, our spirit is then reborn, and we find faith, and hope, and carry on.

Remarkable, isn't it?

Sunshine a wonderful poem.

So to you, my friend, whether I've known you briefly
or for all time's eternity, we'll share our feelings,
and know rapport, in life's most certain extremity,
I will be there for you, as you will be there for me,
and if I have to pray to find you, I hope you'll pray for me.

I especially love the last line, if everyone would follow the example of the good samaritian then this world could be just like heaven.
a wonderful poem really enjoyed reading this.

This poem hit directly home Sunshine.  I must say after I read this a lot of things came floating back into my memory.  I lost my father 2 years ago and after about 3 weeks of help and encouragement from people it stopped...no more hugs, no more "Are you doing ok's?", no more "I Love you's" and this crushed me.  People seem to forget that even after 2 years we need that listening ear and those gentle words of comfort, because for some the pain of a lost one doesn't hit home until months or years later.  I have to say this touched my heart deeply, thanks so much for this poem.

God Bless!
