There was a country doctor, who worked in this small town
He tried to help the sickly, and the people who were down

He always made his house calls; and never did he say
'I can't start the healing, unless you start to pay'

He had a little office in the middle of the town
and folks would come to see him from miles and miles around

The payments that he got were not always in money
a chicken, a hog, a loaf of bread, sometimes a jar of honey

One day I went to see him but on his office there
was a little wooden sign saying 'Office moved upstairs'

He'd fixed his little office with a homey atmosphere
and all the many patients thought the office was so dear

Then one sad day, we missed him.  He had a heart attack
and when he died that Sunday morn; it took the town aback

They had the largest funeral they'd ever held in town
Each person carried little stones, as many as they found

They piled the stones up by his grave.  They reached so high up there
And on the top they placed his sign, saying, "Office moved upstairs!"

Grtandma Amy,
This is a touching and delightful poem-flavored with simple country charm & goodness that brings back many memories of what used to be-and many who have touched my life in great and unselfish ways.  Thank you for sharing it with us,   David

Dear Grandma Amy; I love this poem so much, I just read it to my husband and we both enjoyed it! I sure wish we had doctors like that in this day and age. I remember when our doctor used to make house calls. Sad to see such personal and loving care from the medical profession disappear. Beautifully written poem, such perfect rhyme and flow! Love, Ellie

Dear Grandma Amy,
A delightful read. Reminders of a country
doctor I knew as a little girl. Sweet memories. Blessings, marcy

Such a sweet poem, very touching!  Almost made me cry.  Great job with this one!

I sit and ponder and lift thoughts from my consciousness, spilling them forth to here, raising my lit cigarette and blowing smoke in the face of reality.

This is great! There's nothing that can replace them kind. The caring they had for people and genuine concern for their well being.

It seems to be few and far between these days. We had a good one when we lived in GA and I sure do miss him. Haven't found one like him since.

I love how you ended this poem! I really enjoyed this immensely! Fantastic job

Grandma Amy - I loved this, it's so full of the "good ol' days" - what a great way you have of telling stories.  This is beautiful.  Bonnie

oh dear, thank you everyone for your sweet comments.  It is sad to see the drastic changes from my younger years to today, but the memories are always here.  That is until I lose my memory in my 90's hehe.  But hey I think for my age I am doing pretty darn good

God bless you all!

Grandma Amy
