In recent days of fighting the new breed
Of bugs and creepy crawly things
We commenced to screening the back porch
Going broke on the citronella torch
New patio furniture to relax upon
We sat there swatting gnats and moths
Fresh tea and lemonade became pools
For flying insects on a holiday cruise
Like the seekers of the spirit
They bombarded the porch light, falling in our dinner
In which the mosquitos would stand and toast
All over our bodies, their gracefull host
So we went to Lowes and began the task
Of screening the meeting place of the pestering mass
To our dismay, we had a guest
Unknown to us, there was a nest
Upon inspection, and to our surprise
There were three to total, hidden from sight
A robin's nest, a wren as well
A dove had made hers first, to tell
Tiny hatchlings in the eaves
Inside the porch of our insect retreat
There she was, not happy with us
Hey this is my home, you pesky nut!
The wren also, had a few notes to add
Keep away from my eggs, or I'll peck your head
The robin played hurt, with wing of lame
Leading us away from her 5 blue eggs
So with heart, and compassion too
My husband and I knew what we had to do
We finished half of the porch today
And left the guests an open doorway
We'll watch the hatchlings gain in strength
As they learn to fly and try their wings
Just when you think you have a home
You find out, it's not just your own
I feel blessed, that they found peace
On our back porch, among the eaves
And surprisingly enough, I might add
The bugs have diminished, as dinner for the guests!
So they've more than enough, paid for their stay
I don't look forward to check out day!

Dear Regina; This is a fantasic poem! How wonderful a story and so cleverly written! Those mommies will have plenty to feed their babies, thus reducing the bug population! You put it all together so beautifully. Check-out day will be a sad one. I feel so cheered by this lovely poetic tale. You are so talented!
Love, Ellie< !signature-->

Hi Regina,
It sounds like your place is the place to be at Easter time. I sure enjoyed this poem. I guess sometimes we forget that we co-exist, you have a pleasant way of reminding us of that.

Regina,
You delight us  as you unfold your experiences-both of your misfortunes because of the insect infestations, and of the detoured delights of your feathered friends.
This was a very delightful read--thank you for sharing your experience in this lovely poem.  David

What a wonderful poem. You could have been standing under my carport as you described this scene. One of our "family things with the grandkids", is watching over these nests. Last year we had a close up view as a
nest was made in a hanging fern basket. I love how you captured this in poem. Marcy

ps: especially like the title, "Holiday Inn"!
If you had thrown a few stray dogs in the verse then you would have my number.{smile}

Regina what a story you tell. You made me laugh at your host of bugs. It is wonderful to see how we actually share with the wildlife and don't realize it. We had a bird build her nest on our overhang. It's over our porch and she built her nest right there on the beam, not hidden from view. It was from the other birds, but not from us. It was a treasure to be able to be so close when those babies hatched, and could see them sticking their little heads out, mouths wide open waiting for mom and food.

Thank for bringing that wonderful memory back to me, I was sad to see them go too.
