Adversity, contention
Every day the tension
So thick it polluted the air
Backbiting, tearing down
The belief and faith
Of work, hard work
Unoticed
Personal lives, shattered dreams
Packed up in the briefcase
And brought to the job
I was the first one that caught it
I was the first one she had seen
For weeks
Every effort undermined
Respectfully I took it all
Trying harder each day
I thought maybe I was weak
To be spoken to like a dog
To be torn down behind my back
To say nothing and ignore it
My temper flared
I spoke up
I told her to back off
Even at the risk of my job
Every thing I had done
Was erased by one angry person
Who was angry at the world
It was my turn
Even though I knew
I had done nothing wrong
My mistakes were human
She hated me for no reason
This person I had worked with
For 5 years
Now could not stand to be
In my presence
And had no valid reasons why
So I
Simply said I was sorry
And that I would continue to try
To be myself
To be a person of good spirit
And to create a positive statement
In everything I did
Whether At this office
Or another
And today
I recieved the biggest bouquet of flowers
With a card that said
Thank you
For all you do and have done
Your hard work and your friendship
I appreciate you so much
With tears in my eyes
I put the bouquet on my desk
To display the peace offering
To the world
With easy harsh words
I could have destroyed her
With easy mean thoughts
I could have brought her to ruin
With easy gossip
I could have ended her reputation
As a person of authority
But then I wouldn't have recieved
The blessing
Of flowers from the enemy
Who is now a humble ally
In the future of my dreams

Regina - Good for you!!!!  Isn't it funny how a few kinds words, in the face of adversity, can turn things around. Obviously this person knows of the sweet soul and courage you possess.  I'll try to remember this well written reminder when trouble comes my way.  Bonnie

Regina what a lesson you lay out for others!
Good for you! BRAVO!
Sometimes they need to be told to back off, and it makes them stop and think. You're right when you say it's so easy to gossip and put them in ruin all in an angry attititude!

This is simply spectacular! I'm proud of how you handled it! Shall remain with me as a reminder

Our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

Regina, What a great lesson you have shared.
She may have learned to change her heart by
watching you and your reactions. Wow, I do thank you for this poem. It touches, teaches and blesses me this day.   Marcy

RWood~
A loving gesture from your heart.
The world of another may be mired in
shades of gray that we cannot see ...
by shining a little light in their direction, they are warmed by the glow
of friendship.

I've often thought that an 'enemy' is someone that I've yet to meet and invite into the circle of friendship that surrounds my heart.

dear Regina; You are so right on! beautifully written poem. We are on the same wave length! The Lord gave you the Grace to handle this pefectly and Flowers too! Those flowers were from Jesus, actually. Don't you think? He's saying to you "well done, good and faithful servant" Sisters in Christ for sure! You are one terrific lady! Love, Ellie

a common situation, though not a common conclusion. its not everyday that a persons adversary wilfully blesses them.sometimes people are strange, but god is unchanging.
perhaps he was rewarding you openly for the times you held your peace in secret. an interesting lesson for those who face the same trial. good work.

Regina,
Thank you.  I need your example , I need your encouragement- for often I'm seeminmgly faced with similar situations in the work place and often, I fail to rise above the self-pity and harshness to reach out in love and try to understand. Thnak you for sharing with me a positive experience.  I must try harder to do the same.  David
