Last week in the town where I preach
A terrible fire occured,
All area firefighters were summoned
Who reported in mass when they heard.

In a literal matter of minutes
A spark caused a consuming flame,
And all in it's path was destroyed
The mill never will be the same!

An accident which causes such havoc
Caused no loss of life, but much work,
Upon closer investigation
Was found to be set by some jerk.

I went today, the place to survey
What an awful and gruesome sight,
A member of my congregation suggested
To me, here's a sermon to write.

She suggested it as an illustration of sin
Which brings on the fires of hell,
Standing as an ominus object lesson
Of the fierce fruits of not doing well.

A spark of sin may not seem so deadly
But if it's alloewd to ignite
Soon sin will be spreading it's damage
Thus the fires of Hell to pre-light!

And if you should choose sin's pathway
You are putting yourself in Harm's Way,
Don't be surprised, if without notice
You're cut down, destroyed, sin to pay!

Some effects of sin seem incidental
Yet can destroys much, just the same,
But when we ignite sinful passions
Oh what desvastion it claims!

But the difference in Hell everlasting
Unlike high shooting flames giving light,
To be engulfed in it's dark blaze forever
Is to bring you to Eternity's night!

Where the worm dieth not forever
And the roaring flame's there never quenched,
Avoid at all cost this destruction
Nor to sin's lustful flame, ne'er an inch!

Yet Jesus comes to your true rescue
Sparing from sin and from shame,
For He is our Ultimate fireman
Oh won't you this Hero now claim?

For only by living for Jesus
Can we escape our soul's greatest loss,
Drenched in cool waters of Salvation
He absorb sin's full heat, paid the cost!

I haven't yet preached this sermon
But I feel That I will very soon,
For that Fire was sin's great reminder
For the need of pure lives, well attuned!

David - You certainly have written a powerful piece here....I'm sure it will be a great sermon.  I love how you have taken such a terrible thing and used it to share a message of such importance.  Thanks for sharing this. Bonnie

David what a way to put it! Something people can truly connect with.  The ashes and suit, and how it spreads...and how Jesus can make it as white as snow.  Excellent dear David!

Dear David; Another powerful message and an incredible analogy. The truth will set us free, and you are wonderfully gifted at putting all this into poetic form so beautifully, as usual!  Ellie

It's a small world--with many interesting circumstances, isn't it. Marcy, I am the minister of the Bearden Church of Christ on
Ceder street--stop in if you get the chance!
