Jonah was a prophet,
Of the LORD most high,
Was told to go to Nineveh,
And against their wickedness cry!

The City of Nineveh,
The capital of the Assyrian nation,
Was an enemy of Israel,
A constant source of agitation.

The LORD wanted them preached to,
It was Jonah that HE sent,
But Jonah had other plans,
So off toward Tarsish he went!

Jonah headed in the wrong direction,
Away from the presence of the LORD,
Went to the seaport Joppa,
To find a ship that he could board.

He found a ship going to Tarsish,
His fare he quickly paid,
The crew shortly then cast-off,
But soon became dismayed!

The LORD sent a tempest wind,
Which roiled the angry sea,
The ships integrity was in danger,
Had nowhere safe to flee!

All the sailors were so upset,
To each his own god did pray,
Threw the cargo into the sea,
So the ship would lesser weigh!

The Captain found Jonah sleeping,
While his crew for safety sought,
"Oh Sleeper, Arise, call upon on your God,
That we should perish not!"

To determine who's responsible,
Let us all our own lots cast,
Let it find the one who's guilty,
The lot fell on Jonah at last!

Pray tell us why this evil,
Has come upon us, we will hear,
Jonah said he fled from the Living GOD,
Disobeyed HIM, now HE'S to fear!

Tell us quick, lest we perish,
What to do to quell this storm,
Jonah said, toss me overboard,
For the seas to return to their norm!

When they threw him over the rail,
The sailors got their wish,
As the prophet Jonah sank,
He got swallowed by a great fish!

But Jonah did not die,
Three days in that belly stayed,
Then Jonah cried unto GOD,
So fervently Jonah prayed!

The Lord spoke unto the fish,
Jonah was spit out on dry land,
His deliverance, plain to see,
Was by GOD's merciful hand!

Jonah was commissioned once again,
To preach of Ninevehs coming destruction,
He did just exactly that,
Followed all the LORDS instructions!

The people of Nineveh believed on GOD,
And repented of their evil ways,
From the king to the most humble,
In sackcloth and ashes, lamented their evil days!

God saw how they had changed,
From destruction they were saved,
They responded to Jonah's preaching,
By their sins were no longer enslaved!

JESUS spoke of the prophet Jonah,
When the Pharisees wanted a sign,
As Jonah was three days and three nights in whale,
The son of man will be buried same length of time.

JESUS foretold of HIS burial,
We must praise HIM everyday,
Resurrected the first day of the week,
HE ROLLED THE STONE AWAY!

If Nineveh, a Godless heathen city,
Responded so mightily to Jonahs' cry,
How much more should WE pay attention,
To our LORD, who gave HIS Life for you and I?

Wow, Dennis, a Masterpiece! Some of this story , you so eloquently put to verse, shed
light on areas that I had never thought about. Very well done. Praise the Lord for people in the Word, writting for all to understand and to some these words unheard.
Ya'll are really blessing me.  JESUS is just loving all this. God Bless, Marcy

Very enjoyable retelling of the Jonah story. God has a way of setting us on the right track, when we choose not to listen to him!

Dennis,
This is another installment of high caliber to add to your collection, which keeps growing. Keep up the wonderful work.  (I would like to see what you do with Penticost-Acts 2, if you'd like a suggestion).
Thank you so much for enriching our forum here with your works,  David

To some, being swallowed by a great fish, is likened the same as being swallowed by great sorrow. HE can deliver us from it all. Such a great story, and skillfully told. We can run, but we can't hide from his purpose. I love it.
Sincerely,
Rwood

Ellie, thank you for your kind remarks and   encouragement!

Dear Pepper, You flatter me once again!

Denise, Thanks once again for yor kind words!

Alle'cram, Though most of this work talks of Jonah, my intent was to lay a foundation to point to JESUS. It is also my hope that in writting this poem, JESUS would be honored!

WhtDove, Thank you also for your kind remarks, I'll try to post more often!

Septsong, God does redirect our steps if we stray (if we allow it), the loving Shepherd tending to HIS flock! Thanks for your reply!

Deleeme, I'm blushing from your generous remarks, I'll take the Acts 2 suggestion into consideration. Thanks for the suggestion! As far as enriching this forum, I feel that this forum is the one blessing me, thanks to all of you for letting me share my work here!

Dear Rwood, Yes we can be swallowed by sorrow but Thanks be to GOD that HE does not want us to live there, HE wants us to live abundant lives glorifing HIM!

This story belongs to GOD, I just put it in a different form, I hope it blesses you and Honors HIM! Dennis :^)
