I remember sitting on Papaw's knee
When I was just a child,
His Bible opened on his lap,
His pipe smoke sweet and mild.
A kindly southern gentleman,
Who feared our God above,
Who with his rough exterior,
Inside, was filled with love.
He would talk to me of bygone days,
Those days before I was born,
And he'd quote the bible chapter, verse
From it's pages tattered and worn.
And in his southern drawl he'd say
This book was his best friend,
He would carry it with him always,
Keep it near him till the end.
And I'll never forget one night out back,
He gave thanks for all that we had,
All of the family, friends and food,
Our life was never too bad.
And he told me if I  ever wondered,
About this faith of ours,
To go out in the dark and just look up,
And it would be written in the stars.
Papaw passed several years ago,
But each night I look up to the sky,
And I remember his words, and see the twinkle,
That I used to see in his eye.

I love the way you say "Papaw", not many call their (grandfather) Papaw as I do too. I love this poem. You also had a special person in your life. It seems they had a great thing in common, Our Lord. They planted the greatest seeds in our hearts. Thank you for this beautiful piece of your heart.
Sincerely,
Rwood

Bravo! You gave a very wonderful tender touch in meeting the challenge given. A wonderful portrayal of a dear past relative and the evidence of his faith.  I enjoyed this poem very much,  David
