If a better knowledge of God's Word you seek,
Then pay attention to your technique
Time and again, it has been shown,
APPROACH is important, if God's will be known.

First I suggest, you approach it with PRAYER,
Humbly to seek your answers in there
Handling alright the Word of Truth
Can make you become a Spiritual Sleuth.

Another concern-it's DIVISIONS you must know,
So you will know where in the Bible to go
Through time God has spoken through different ones,
Now to us He speaks, through His Belov'd Son.

Discern that the Bible spans 3 Dispensations,
The Patriarch, Jewish, and now to All Nations
Discern between the COVENANTS given,
And rightly determine, under which one we're living.

The Bible is God's Word--but NOT ALL WORDS are His,
As you read please, pay attention to this
Therein many speak, yes even the devil,
Make sure who you're hearing is on the level.

Also consider TO WHOM it is said,
Was it meant for you, those words to be led?
Some words apply to a select few,
Or were for the past, and not meant for you.

E'er keep in mind, the CONTEXT of the passage,
This will give sense and help open it's message
Was it figurative,or meant literal?
The context will show, which way to go.

There also are STUDY TOOLS that we can use,
To help in our quest, they're yours for to choose
Like Parallel Versions and a Concordance too,
These sure will help in the study you do.

Let me summarize the things that I've said,
In studying God's Word, we seek to be led
Therefore approach it with the utmost care,
Praying for wisdom, yes, start your search there.

Then rightly the Word divide, Handle it alright,
Discern it's Divisions, and not All words are right
Seek in Christ's Gospel your authority,
Those words 'specially given, for you and me.

Then study the message in it's context,
Lest it be twisted, and it's truth be missed,
Use study tools, different versions and such
Then in your studies you'll profit so much.!

David,
I love your insight. I, too, believe that the only way to find out what God's truth is, is to pray. I wholeheartedly believe that prayer works. What a blessing it is in our lives to be able to speak with our Heavenly Father. I don't know if I could live on this earth without being able to talk with Him.
Thank you for this new creation of poetry.
Howie

A scholarly look at how we should study by one who continues to inspire and delight us by his wisdom shared. Yes, we need to have our hearts in our studies, but we must also use our Heads! (Question, Was Herminutics formulated by someone named Herman? and would this study be a form of Davminutics?)Great job! Dennis :^)

WOW David! I"m impressed!  A book called, How To Enjoy the Bible, by Bullinger! Great book.  Also tools to be able to break any given word back to it's original language is so important!

So important these tools given us, to find "truth" in God's word!

Excellent work my friend!!

Extremely important wisdom you've given.  To whom a message is directed, the context it's in, when and where, helps us better under-stand what's being said.  Repeats (verily,  verily, etc.)emphasized that part, and study guides are as indespensible as dictionaries are to an avid reader or writer. Thank you so much for putting that wisdom in rhyme for us.

David:

This was well done.  I would have substituted the DISPENSATIONS stanza with a LAW AND GOSPEL stanza myself but, hey, what do you expect from a pesky Lutheran.     Well done.

Jim

P.S.  BTW, Thank you, thank you, thank you for remembering context.

Thank you all for your kind words and comments about the poetic attempt to share some principles of Bible interpetation (or HERMENEUTICS).  And no, Dennis, Hermeneutics was not named after a guy named Herman, But hermeneutikos in Greek means, "to interpet."
Thus as realted to the Bible, Hermeneutics pertains the the principles of Biblical interpetion. I know in the scope of this poem, I could not cover it all but I believe I have hit some highlights and important matters to consider and use, as we seeek and search out the truth of God's Word.  God bless you all,   David

David you have hit all the important hightlights that would have saved me much grief many years back. I wish all ministers were so in touch with God's wisdom as you are. All I can say to this poem is AMEN! Keep spreading the truth, David!

Once again David, I must say that your words are so inspired by the Lord that I learn from each one. Such a great gift and teacher you are. This should be put in every Bible class there is. Fantastic and simple. I look forward to each and every entry.
Sincerely,
Rwood
