I've long marvelled at the Apostles' Creed, how in very few words the entire Christian faith is put forth in kernel.  Here's my poetic take on it:

Our Common Faith

In God the Father I believe,
who made the heavens, earth, and sea.
And I believe in Jesus Christ our Lord, God's only Son,

who by the Holy Spirit wrought
into the Virgin's womb, begotten,
born a Man, humanity and deity in one.

Though innocent of any crime,
was tortured, mocked, crucified.
Dead and buried, down He went to regions dark and black.

The third day He arose again,
ascended up to heaven, sits
enthroned beside the Father till in judgment He comes back.

And I believe in God the Holy
Spirit, in the holy Catholic
Church, the blest community called forth from every tribe.

And baptized in His wondrous Name,
forgiven, we are freed from blame.
And though we die, again we'll rise to claim eternal life.

Summed it up in a nutshell. God made flesh, come to save humanity!

When you can't make up your mind
Which way is right for you,
Stop and softly ask yourself,
What Would Jesus Do?

Vincent,
this is a lovely message and poetic lesson.very inspiring...
very good work!!!!!!   take care, janet marie

Some things cannot be explained by verses that rhyme,
They are not measured by the commitment of time.
Some emotions run too deep to be described by words,
Forgiveness and understanding-
remain the most beautiful words ever heard.

How very true and how lovely you've set it in verse.  We all need to repeat these affirmations often.  Thanks for the new slant on it.

Beautifully written. It sounds like a hymn.
This poem does say it all.

Thank you all, especially Geo.  I'm always flattered when someone actually wants a copy of one of my poems.  I recently revised this one.  I originally spaced it according the  12 articles of the Creed, but that made it hard to read--the meter was easily lost.  So I adopted this simpler format.  Here's how it originally looked:

Our Common Faith

(1) In God the Father I believe,
who made the heavens, earth, and sea.

(2) And I believe in Jesus Christ
            our Lord, God's only Son,
(3) who by the Holy Spirit wrought
            into the Virgin's womb begotten,
            born a Man,
            humanity and deity in one.
(4) Though innocent of any crime,
            was tortured, mocked, crucified.
Dead and buried, down He went
            to regions dark and black.
(5) The third day He arose again,
(6) ascended up to heaven,
            sits enthroned beside the Father
(7) till in judgment He comes back.

(8) And I believe
            in God the Holy Spirit,
(9) in the holy Catholic Church,
            the blest community
            called forth from every tribe.
(10) And baptized in His wondrous Name,
forgiven, we are freed from blame.
(11) And though we die, again we'll rise
(12) to claim eternal life.
            Amen.
