We all know a follower, of one kind or another
It might be a sister, a friend or even brother.
Everyone's included, we all will follow something
Whether it be money or, a new band that is budding.

Stop for just a moment, take a simple look around
At things that people follow, there are many that abound.
Take for instance people, that are following a band
They'll travel far and wide, from the east to west coastland.

Another is the Pope, a multitude follow him
Thousands stand around him, singing religious hymn.
You can buy a picture of, the Pope that costs ten bucks
Maybe the price is higher, if the frame you gets deluxe.

Take a moment to think, when you enter in a store
How much does the picture cost, the one of our Savior?
For the Pope a higher price, for the Savior's, almost free
I think there's something wrong here, it's called idolatry.

People become our objects, like a popular new band
Why didn't people follow Christ, when He walked our land?
People didn't follow him, like they do a budding star
There were only a select few, that followed Jesus far.

It seems we tend to worship, things that are not God
People, money, jobs and homes, isn't this quite odd?
What have these others done for us, that could be compared
To everything that Jesus gave, and taught and even shared?

When we take the worldly things, and love them more than God
Whether it be cars or homes, it's nothing more than fraud.
That's what idolatry is called, it's loving something more
And putting those things first in life, instead of our Savior.

Great points here Rebecca.  You never cease to amaze me!

Thank you Echo! I don't quite know what to say.

Joy thanks so much! I think it's very true, we hold many things as our idols I think without being aware we do it.

From someone who is a pack rat and for whom stuff and things have too much significance, I thank you for your sentiment and poetic message.

But, and this is a very gentle but, is having pricey pictures of the Pope idolatry? I'm not so sure that is the strongest argument - many people who stand in the rain to see their Pope believe they stand there to see an example of how to find and follow their Savior.  Can a faith's leader lead many without becoming an object to some? Can we follow a human shepherd and still be of His flock? Would it be better to have more expensive pictures of God and cheap pictures of the Pope?  I hope I don't offend anyone with my questions, but I wonder (and maybe I will write).

To be honest with you I actually had something else there and I changed it. I probably shouldn't have done that.  I take no offence to your questions at all. Actually they are very good ones. My point being that people tend to follow the wrong things for the wrong reasons.  The conversation I was having with my Mom I will let you in on here. She was saying that some people in the crowd were selling pictures of the Pope for say $10. And she could walk into a garage sale and someone would sell the picture of the Pope for more than they would the picture of Jesus. After all Jesus is the one who died for us. Having a picture of the Pope is not idolatry unless you worship that picture. Or that picture is more important than God.
Things, and any things, whatever those might be, that are put to be more important in our lives than God, is idolatry!

It's biblical not to love anything more than God. Love your things, or people, but love them less than you love God!

Rebecca, Thanks for posting this!!! I needed some direction in my life to get things back on track and chasing the almighty buck just isn't cutting it so I have committed myself to spending my free time to My Lord and to my family and have cut back on the business. My health was going down the tubes and no sleep was making me cranky and people don't like cranky people LOL Thanks for taking the time to make me stop and think and put my priorities in the proper perspective. Love ya... Shawna< !signature-->

Romantic thanks so much! I have another saying too, Keep the THANKS in THANKSgiving.

Shawna you could make me cry! I'm really happy that it made you stop and think! Thank God for that! We just get too wrapped up in the worldy things sometimes. We came in with nothing and we'll go out with nothing. What will last forever is God, and His word, they are what's eternal!!!
I'm really glad it helped you put things in perspective. I think no matter how hard we work for money, we'll always need more of it, it's one of those things we never have enough of. God Bless you Shawna, and may He guide you in your journey of the changes you are making!  Love ya!!  ~HUGS~
