Not Exactly Strangers

I saw a stranger while traveling through,
A land I knew not of.
He walked my walk, he felt my pain,
But he would not feel my love.
He talked of worlds he’s traveled,
He told of lands he’d gone.
He looked so weary and so tired,
But in his heart, he had a faint song.
He told me how he had been treated
By people he loved in the past.
"And that is why," he said to me,
"I have closed off my heart at last."
"I have no wanting or needing of love."
But this I refused to take in.
"I’m not asking for your heart," I say.
"I’m just asking to be your friend."
"Let me be there for you."
"Let me show you how much I care."
His only reply, to me with a sigh,
"My heart is not mine to share."
I take from deep within myself, my heart,
To which I offer to him.
He only shook his head at me,
His eyes so very dim.
So I stand there, looking down at my hands,
At my heart that I’ve tried to give.
Refused, rejected and pushed away.
Just the same as this stranger had lived.
"I still care whether you like it or not,"
"But push you, I won’t even try."
He nods his head, accepting me,
And I’m happy for just that reply.
So, I return my heart
To the place from where it came.
But knowing now, not like before,
I shall never be the same.
I turn to say goodbye to him,
After time had passed without sound.
But when I turned to say farewell,
He was no where to be found.
At first this saddened me a bit,
If only he were not so strong willed.
But when I felt my heart again,
Some of the emptiness had been filled.
I tried so hard to reach him,
To be what I thought was in need.
When in return, it was me who was lost,
And he had helped plant the seed.
Although he is not with me now,
He will forever be---
A part of my life, a part of my soul,
A very deep part of me.

I really like this! WELCOME to Passions and Spiritual!
There is only one thing I'm having trouble with though. This could go either way with the "he" in here. If it Jesus you are speaking of, He is always with us, never leaves us nor forsakes us.
Nevertheless you have a well written story here and I thoroughly enjoyed this! Thank you!

This is basically about those certain people you meet everyday. You are so convinced that you are exactly what they need in their life, but in the end, we were the ones missing something and they were the ones that gave it to us. It shows lessons in humility as well as meekness. And rest assure, I know without the help of my Heavenly Father, I wouldn't be able to write today. He's never left me.

Melissa,
I am awed by the depth of your message, so beautifully expressed. It is both humbling & encouraging all at once--it appears that you know well from experience the truth of our Lord's words, IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE. Your poem brought out an important point though, that is--even if we are rejected in the gifts and blessing we seek to share--even in this we are more blessed! Thanks for your beautiful insight.
