Your Call
Hey, friend, I know what time it is,hope it's not too late,
Yeah, I know you don't believe, no need to set me straight,
But you've been haunting every thought until I couldn't sleep,
Not waiting for the sun to come, don't think that this can wait.

You've seen the wealthy brethren turn their greenbacks on the poor,
Seen hypocrites like Janus check their lives at the church door,
Seen men of God who've fleeced the flock, call them shepherd's crooks,
Seen snakeskin salesmen sell their heaven in short seven-step books,

You've seen good examples topple, you've seen the faithful stray,
And far too many times you've seen me trip on feet of clay,
Seen those who aim to stop abortion picking up the gun,
Seen Sunday deacons stagger home, lay hands on wife and son,

You've seen white-robed men wear the cross they burn for their crusade,
Seen playing children blown Heaven-high by a holy hand grenade,
Seen Auschwitz guards sing Stille Nacht about a baby Jew,
Seen every foul perversion of what I know is true.

Hey, friend, I know I'm only human isn't a good reason,
Good intentions pave the road and sin's always in season,
We've only one redeeming virtue, but He tips the scales,
For, beyond these earthen vessels, the Lord always prevails.

I've seen false gods like Dagon fall before Him on their face,
Seen the all-surpassing joy when His Spirit rocks the place,
Seen pierced hands tear down the walls and His people reconcile,
Seen God's Amen to grace and hope in a newborn's smile,

I've seen the healings happen when the living flame rains down,
Seen the saints of righteousness pursue the conqueror's crown,
Seen the body of believers rise up to praise His name,
Seen the image on their faces of the Savior they proclaim,

I've seen the saints devote their lives to answering His call,
I've seen the woodwork churches stand against the firing wall,
Seen men and women beaten by the souls they came to save,
Seen the faithful follow the road of roses to the grave.

Hey, friend, I know this Jesus Christ, who, sinless, died for you,
I'm no Damascus thunder, I'm more Balaam's ass, it's true,
But, before you wash your hands of this ages old debate,
Know Jesus is the only Way that leads through Heaven's Gate.

Yeah, friend,I know what time it is, just hope it's not too late.....

Notes:
Janus was the two-faced Roman god of beginnings and endings, patron of doorways.

Very moving piece. Sad, yet very reassuring...to overcome the travisties of this world we must take the hand of Christ.

I loved your poem. I also love your obvious humility, and introspective Christian view.

"Welcome, child," he said.
"Aslan," siad Lucy, "you're bigger."
"That is because you are older, little one," answered he.
"Not besause you are?"
"I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger."
