As Jesus went up to the hills by the sea,
He called to twelve men, "come up here, follow me!"
He called them by name, He called Andrew and Simon
(Who was later called Peter when Jesus renamed him.)

He called out to Philip, "come on, follow me!"
He called James and John, sons of Zebedee.
According to Mark (chapter 3, should you wonder)
He nicknamed these two, James and John, "sons of thunder."

He called Judas, Matthew, and Thaddeus, too,
Thomas, Simon, and Bartholomew
(and yes, if you're counting, the Simons are two,
and this one was planning a government coup!)

He called one more James, "Follow me, come with us!"
(This James you should know, was the son of Alphaus.)
Then after a time He returned to the beach
He gathered the people and started to teach.

But the beach was too small for the crowd in this town,
so Jesus stepped into a boat and sat down.
He spoke of His Father, the Author of love,
and the Kingdom of Heaven, ordained from above!

I am glad, that I can be among the first to comment on your wonderful poem. I have seen poems on the apostles before, sung the Sunday School songs as a kid, but never have I seen such a treatment that gave so much care to detail--This is wonderful, you are to be commended--Write more!

Echo I'm always amazed by your words! You are so gifted! This was unique in I've never seen it done this way before. I love it!!!

Funny though sometimes we overlook those words follow me. He wasn't asking would you.
He said COME, FOLLOW ME! A command, as they were CHOSEN! Great job sweetie!

Wonderful poem, Echo. Many people overlook the fact that the deciples Jesus chose were common men as most of us are. I think he did this to let all of us know we don't need to be rich or great or perfect to be special in His eyes.

Rebecca...Glad you liked it! I am glad you noticed how it was written as follow me of come, commanding them, not asking, cause that is what I was trying to sho with this poem as well as other things. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

KRT...Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this poem!

MIchael...That is a wonderful way to think about it, because we do not need to be rich or perfect to be special in His eyes as you said. We are all special in His eyes, no matter what! The most common of common are used for special wills of the Lord. Thank you for reading and taking the time to respond to this poem!

Sunshine...Thank you most kindly!

I wanted to add one thing about 'Come".."come," IS such an inviting word, especially when spoken by God. The first time it occurs in the Bible is in Genesis 7:1, in the solicitation to salvation. The last reference in the Bible, 65 books later, is in Revelation, "Come, let each one who hears also, say, Come! Let the thirsty one come, anyone who wants to, let him come and drink of the water of life freely." Revelation 22:17.
"come unto me and I will give you rest," are some of the best loved words of Jesus. Millions through the centuries have found comfort in trouble and despair from these familiar words of promise.
"Rest in peace" should never be used just for an epitaph between two dates on a grave marker, but rather as a daily experience of the living. God's promises are for now, today, for you. His restful presence is yours without exhaustion. Come to Him and receive from Him the "rest of your soul."
There is a lot to be said about the word "Come" when spoken by the Lord. I just wanted to add this piece as it has been setting on my heart to post!
