These are not my words, but a rather haunting little piece which has stuck in my memory for many years. In view of what is fast approaching us, I thought I would share them with you, because, although short, I think they are all-encompassing - even a little spine-chilling!
If anyone knows who the author is, I would be most interested to hear. Thanks.

THE SHADOW BY MY FINGER CAST
DIVIDES THE FUTURE FROM THE PAST.
BEHIND ITS UNRETURNING LINE,
THE VANISHED TIME, NO LONGER THINE.

BEFORE IT LIES THE UNKNOWN HOUR,
IN DARKNESS, AND BEYOND THY POWER.
ONE HOUR ALONE IS IN THINE HANDS-
THE “NOW” ON WHICH THE SHADOW STANDS.

I’m sorry Rod I don’t know the author of these fine words but I enjoyed the read. Whoever it was I hope he doesn’t mind this fool adding a couple of verses just to underline his words.

UPON THIS SHADOW MORTALS STAND
LOOK BACK THAT THEY MAY UNDERSTAND
FROM WHAT HAS PASSED WHAT IS TO BE
BUT THERE’S THE PAINFUL RUB YOU SEE

FOR AS THEY PEER INTO THE PAST
BEYOND THE LINE THE FINGER CAST
AND PONDER DEEDS LONG GONE PERPLEXED
THEY MISS THE NOW AND WASTE THE NEXT

I can see why this stuck with you Rod!
Thank you for sharing....
And, Craig, I enjoyed your addition too!

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

It is, indeed, a beautiful and very meaningful poem.

If there's an author ascribed to this work, I don't know a name. But I can tell you where it originates. Bet Nan could, too, since it's only a few hundred miles from where she lives.

This poem is the inscription on a very old sundial at Wellesley College, Mass.

Ron - thank you very much for that information - much appreciated. A very apt inscription for a sundial!

Craig - great work! Thank you for that, and so true are your words of wisdom.

Rod & Craig - These are all pretty profound words.....

Ron - How do you know these things?..... (it's only 75 miles....§;-)
